  • On the edge of my seat

After doing gravity, inventing calculus, sorting out the solar system, what’s a genius to do? Oh … save England by revising the currency! Ptobably as important as the defeat of the Spanish Armada was the revolution of the coinage of the realm. Can’t wait to hear how he pulled it off. Bonus: the narrator is excellent with a pleasant voice.

  • Great story

but oh man the ads. They’re everywhere, the noise levels are louder than the actual story, and they really take you out of the listening experience. Please consider consolidating the ads! It detracts from the storytelling.

  • A new look at a familiar name

This brand new 8 part series from iHeartpodcasts is a perfect blend of history, true crime, and action. It follows the lesser-known occupation of famous British scientist, Issac Newton (yes, that Issac Newton), as lawman and Warden of the Mint. While the position doesn’t exist anymore, this podcast makes it feel more real than ever as it brings to life late 17th century culture and customs. For example, did you know that coffee shops were the social media of the day? Lords (ladies were rarely pe... more

Mary Had a Little Typhoid [from American History Hotline]
Q: How did investigators determine Mallon was a carrier, and what happened when they confronted her?
Investigators traced back illness to multiple households where Mallon had worked; when they asked for samples, Mallon resisted, leading to a tense confrontation and ultimately her quarantine after unsuccessful attempts to obtain evidence.
Mary Had a Little Typhoid [from American History Hotline]
Q: What exactly is typhoid fever and how did it spread in 1906 New York?
Typhoid fever is a deadly bacterial infection transmitted primarily through contaminated food and water; at the time there was limited understanding of germ theory and no vaccine, so outbreaks spread via unsanitary conditions and contaminated sources.
Why Do We Spring Forward? [from American History Hotline]
Q: Donna in Stockton asks why we still have daylight saving time and why we can't get rid of it.
Chad explains that daylight saving time serves two main goals—keeping mornings lighter in winter and evenings lighter in summer—and that a single year-round system (either DST or standard time) would force trade-offs, making some regions unhappy with sunrises or sunsets.
Abraham Lincoln Before the Presidency: What He Learned as a Lawmaker [from American History Hotline]
Q: So we think of Lincoln as the great emancipator. What was his stance on slavery when he was in Congress?
Lincoln consistently voted against slavery throughout his career, even introducing bills to limit its reach during his congressional tenure.
