  • Great Podcast

Thank you, Neil, for another excellent podcast. The tips on how to “paint” oak trees that have had limbs removed was excellent. Gone are the days of letting an oak tree “heal over”. Great to know the newest information, which you always seem to have. Blessings!

  • Talks down to the little guys

I listen because his knowledge makes it worthwhile, however the way he talks down to hard working men in trucks knocking on doors in an attempt to find work makes me sick.

  • Too much advertising

I understand the show needs to make money, but there is literally 5 minutes of gardening advice for every 30 minutes of advertising.

  • Awesome podcast

I’ve been listening to Neil since I moved to Texas in 1992 .. he has an informative show that I have learned a lot about gardening. I am happy that he records his shows since I can listen faithfully wherever I am. Yes , there is advertising but Neil has to pay for broadcasting on a station .. I give him credit for continuing his knowledge transfer . Thank you Neil

January 17, 2026 - Texas Lawn and Garden Hour
Q: What do you recommend once the soil is prepared for a garden?
Neil recommends adding organic matter such as compost and peat moss, and possibly expanded shale for clay soils, then mixing it in with a tiller.
January 10, 2026 - Texas Lawn and Garden Hour
Q: Should I treat the branches after pruning my crepe myrtles?
You do not need to seal cuts on crepe myrtles, but make sure to prune close to the trunk without leaving a large wound.
January 10, 2026 - Texas Lawn and Garden Hour
Q: What should I do about peach trees that are blooming early?
Peach varieties have specific chilling requirements, and the caller's tree may need fewer chill hours than available in their area. If blooms come out too early, they may get frozen later.
January 10, 2026 - Texas Lawn and Garden Hour
Q: Can blueberries be grown in my area?
Blueberries need acidic soil with a low pH, generally found in East Texas. The caller's area likely has alkaline soil, making it unsuitable for blueberries, but blackberries are a better alternative.
January 3, 2026 - Texas Lawn and Garden Hour
Q: What should I do about my tree's bark that has been eaten by animals?
For bark missing up high, it's usually caused by squirrels, and for damaged bark near the ground, it's often rodents. If it's girdled all the way around, that can kill the tree.
