  • Great Podcast

Thank you, Neil, for another excellent podcast. The tips on how to “paint” oak trees that have had limbs removed was excellent. Gone are the days of letting an oak tree “heal over”. Great to know the newest information, which you always seem to have. Blessings!

  • Talks down to the little guys

I listen because his knowledge makes it worthwhile, however the way he talks down to hard working men in trucks knocking on doors in an attempt to find work makes me sick.

  • Too much advertising

I understand the show needs to make money, but there is literally 5 minutes of gardening advice for every 30 minutes of advertising.

  • Awesome podcast

I’ve been listening to Neil since I moved to Texas in 1992 .. he has an informative show that I have learned a lot about gardening. I am happy that he records his shows since I can listen faithfully wherever I am. Yes , there is advertising but Neil has to pay for broadcasting on a station .. I give him credit for continuing his knowledge transfer . Thank you Neil

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

March 21, 2026 - 1PM KLIF
Q: What is the best way to deal with many tiny live oak saplings under a mature tree without harming azaleas and ferns?
Avoid overreliance on Roundup initially; instead use physical removal with a sharpened hoe for quick, early removal. If spraying is needed, use a targeted, low-pressure application of a 2,4-D broadleaf weed killer with minimal soil impact, and proceed slowly with observation to minimize collateral damage.
March 15, 2026 - 8AM WBAP
Q: Cheryl asks about fertilizing and pests on avocado trees in pots, and what might be eating the leaves.
Neil explains to use a water-soluble fertilizer mixed per label directions, applied with watering, and suggests checking whether the damage is on new growth to determine current pest activity; common culprits include snails, slugs, grasshoppers, or caterpillars, with night activity more indicative of snails or slugs.
February 22, 2026 - 8AM WBAP
Q: How deep can I cover trees with soil when adding fill, and what are the risks?
Do not cover beyond the drip line and avoid keeping roots buried under thick fill; excessive depth impedes oxygen and water to roots and can kill the tree.
February 22, 2026 - 8AM WBAP
Q: Should I sprig Bermuda grass or plant later in the spring given the two-acre area and recent soil work?
Given the late season and heat risk, Bermuda grass is recommended; rye is not advised as it will struggle in rising temperatures. Consider seeding in pieces and using sod to manage erosion while you establish the stand.
February 21, 2026 - Texas Lawn and Garden Hour
Q: What is the best approach to growing a dogwood tree in Gonzales given alkaline soils and hot summers?
Check the soil pH, consider acidic amendments like sphagnum peat moss and finely ground bark mulch, and recognize that dogwoods may require heavy soil conditioning or alternative white-blooming trees if the site cannot support acidic conditions.
