  • Great Podcast

Thank you, Neil, for another excellent podcast. The tips on how to “paint” oak trees that have had limbs removed was excellent. Gone are the days of letting an oak tree “heal over”. Great to know the newest information, which you always seem to have. Blessings!

  • Talks down to the little guys

I listen because his knowledge makes it worthwhile, however the way he talks down to hard working men in trucks knocking on doors in an attempt to find work makes me sick.

  • Too much advertising

I understand the show needs to make money, but there is literally 5 minutes of gardening advice for every 30 minutes of advertising.

  • Awesome podcast

I’ve been listening to Neil since I moved to Texas in 1992 .. he has an informative show that I have learned a lot about gardening. I am happy that he records his shows since I can listen faithfully wherever I am. Yes , there is advertising but Neil has to pay for broadcasting on a station .. I give him credit for continuing his knowledge transfer . Thank you Neil

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

May 9, 2026 - Texas Lawn and Garden Hour
Q: Why do the white irises dominate, and how do I fix it?
The white irises are more vigorous; to restore balance, dig and divide the clumps and transplant the pieces to give the colored iris space, preventing white from crowding them out.
May 9, 2026 - Texas Lawn and Garden Hour
Q: What should I do about cedar apple rust near my pears?
Remove nearby eastern red cedar or juniper trees, as the rust mostly affects the fruit trees; consider seeking a university-backed guide for up-to-date fungicide options and a local nursery's advice.
May 17, 2026 - 8AM WBAP
Q: What should I do about spider mites on junipers?
Thump a clipped twig onto white paper to check for specks indicating mites, then spray the plant thoroughly with an insecticide labeled for mites, repeating as needed across two or three applications.
May 30, 2026 - Texas Lawn and Garden Hour
Q: What should I do about my newly planted St. Augustine plugs and when should I fertilize them?
Fertilize at half the recommended rate for new grass, using a high-nitrogen fertilizer with 30-40% slow-release nitrogen, and avoid heavy feeding in the middle of summer to prevent greay leaf spot; after establishment, follow normal fertilization schedules.
April 18, 2025 - 1PM KLIF
Q: What should I use to improve soil for a vegetable garden according to your guidance?
In preparing new garden soil, use a generous mix of well-rotted manure, sphagnum peat moss, pine bark mulch, and compost to create a rich, well-draining bed; aim for several inches of organic matter and consider a structured plan from Chapter 1 of Lone Star Gardening where soil prep is discussed in depth.
