  • Great Podcast

Thank you, Neil, for another excellent podcast. The tips on how to “paint” oak trees that have had limbs removed was excellent. Gone are the days of letting an oak tree “heal over”. Great to know the newest information, which you always seem to have. Blessings!

  • Talks down to the little guys

I listen because his knowledge makes it worthwhile, however the way he talks down to hard working men in trucks knocking on doors in an attempt to find work makes me sick.

  • Too much advertising

I understand the show needs to make money, but there is literally 5 minutes of gardening advice for every 30 minutes of advertising.

  • Awesome podcast

I’ve been listening to Neil since I moved to Texas in 1992 .. he has an informative show that I have learned a lot about gardening. I am happy that he records his shows since I can listen faithfully wherever I am. Yes , there is advertising but Neil has to pay for broadcasting on a station .. I give him credit for continuing his knowledge transfer . Thank you Neil

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

April 18, 2025 - 1PM KLIF
Q: What should I use to improve soil for a vegetable garden according to your guidance?
In preparing new garden soil, use a generous mix of well-rotted manure, sphagnum peat moss, pine bark mulch, and compost to create a rich, well-draining bed; aim for several inches of organic matter and consider a structured plan from Chapter 1 of Lone Star Gardening where soil prep is discussed in depth.
April 18, 2025 - 1PM KLIF
Q: Do you recommend gypsum for loosening dirt in Dallas soils?
No, gypsum is not useful for most Dallas-area soils; it does not improve permeability or tilth in most cases. Organic matter is a better universal amendment, and only in high-sodium soils would gypsum provide a trade-off by replacing sodium with calcium.
April 19, 2026 - 8AM WBAP
Q: What should I change about my tomato fertilization if I already have heavy phosphorus in the soil?
Switch to a high-nitrogen fertilizer (such as 12-4-8) and ensure regular watering; too much phosphorus can tie up other nutrients, so avoid adding more phosphorus and rely on soil test guidance.
April 11, 2026 - Texas Lawn and Garden Hour
Q: What would you suggest as the first step to diagnose yellowing leaves on gardenias?
Begin by checking for iron deficiency, since it accounts for the vast majority of gardenia problems in Texas; look for yellow leaves with dark green veins and check if the yellowing is most prominent at the tips of new growth.
April 5, 2026 - 8AM WBAP
Q: How should I approach broadleaf weed killers and fertilizer for North Texas lawns this April?
Use broadleaf weed killers carefully with a dedicated spray tank, avoid applying when windy, and choose an all-nitrogen fertilizer with low phosphorus, emphasizing slow-release nitrogen for steady growth.
