Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Kate Baker - Finding kindness in a sometimes unkind world
Q: Can you tell us about your book and why kindness is framed as a discipline in a tough environment?
The book argues that kindness is not weakness or passivity; it is a backbone that helps people stay human, build trust, calm situations, and still enforce boundaries and authority. It provides tools to protect one's values in difficult environments and to remain effective without becoming cynical or cruel.
Dr Vince Hurley - Speaking out on ABC's Q&A for Domestic Violence survivors
Q: What are the main lessons policing taught you about compassion and listening?
Vince reflects on how compassion was undervalued in earlier policing, the importance of listening without interrupting, and how hostage negotiations reinforced the skill of letting victims and perpetrators speak to reveal truths and reduce trauma.
Dr Vince Hurley - Speaking out on ABC's Q&A for Domestic Violence survivors
Q: What is your view on removing the word 'domestic' from domestic violence, and why?
He argues that the word domestic can minimize the perceived severity by implying it happens within private settings; removing it could help frame violence as a broader societal issue and improve how young people understand and respond to it, though he notes some victims prefer keeping the term for personal and legal reasons.
Dr Vince Hurley - Speaking out on ABC's Q&A for Domestic Violence survivors
Q: Can I ask how early is early, and what would be your main message or messages?
Vince describes his programmatic focus on early intervention with boys in schools, emphasizing how rejection in relationships can lead to harmful outcomes, and outlining a plan to engage educators on anti-violence education and the social dynamics that contribute to aggression.
Kirsty Prince - The price she paid for reporting a crime
Q: Can you walk us through what happened after you reported the photos to your governor and why the response felt so dismissive?
Kirsty explains that reporting led to a few inquiries but no transparent disciplinary outcomes. She describes being kept in the dark, receiving only generic statements or 'KPI-ticking' responses, and ultimately seeing the perpetrator reinstated without proper communication or accountability.
