The Two Intruders For two decades, Canberra residents have become familiar with signs asking: Who killed Irma? It's a question that stems from a 1999 home invasion, a violent search for cash and valuables which left 72-year-old Irma Palasics dead and her husband Gregor badly beaten. Police have been searching for the two intruders, who left with more than $30,000. Rewards were offered and the Pala... more

  • You know!

Once you notice how often Stocky stitches his sentences together with ‘you know’, you can’t unnotice. Unbearable. If this is your job and you, you know, narrate for a living, you should, you know, actively work to address your vocal tics, instead of just, you know, making us live with it. You know?

  • Wheelie bin reporting

Loved the coverage of the Erin Patterson trial. But as the podcast goes on, it is becoming far less polished. The reporting of the Wheelie bin trial is off-putting. The intermittent giggling of the host and guest sets a poor tone. Why would you joke about where the bin is now and whether the owners would want it back?! Feels really disrespectful to the deceased.

  • Informative, factual only

Initially (for Erin Patterson), the ABC did a good job with a careful and cautious podcast that lays out things factually and avoids speculation or sensationalism. It’s been a very interesting, well-presented, and up-to-date story.

After that initial case, it’s been much less focused, with scattered reporting and much less journalism.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

05 Wheelie Bin Murder | Love and acid in Adelaide
Q: What changes occurred in Lloyd's legal status during the trial, and how did that affect his testimony?
Lloyd initially pleaded guilty to several incidents but later withdrew those pleas; he later testified under immunity for certain topics, with prosecutors noting inconsistencies in his earlier statements and the influence of legal advice on his decisions.
36 | Defence zeros in on lack of motive
Q: Ella asks about the demeanor of the prosecution and defense in court, is it more grilling or more measured?
The hosts respond that it's probative and exploratory rather than hostile, with witnesses often being medical or scientific experts and the approach described as professional and impersonal rather than a 'grilling' style.
36 | Defence zeros in on lack of motive
Q: Erika asks about the vomiting timing and whether this could affect absorption of mushroom toxin, is there an expert answer on that point?
Rachael and Stephen relay that the question wasn't posed to experts in this episode, but Dr. Rogers had referenced vomiting as a potential factor in the timeline; however, no definitive expert answer on absorption timing is provided here.
03 The Two Intruders | The defence case emerges
Q: Francesca asks about how DNA evidence is interpreted when a result is described as being many billions of times more likely to come from one person than another.
The prosecution argues that the DNA samples strongly point to the two men, but the defence contends that the evidentiary context, lab procedures, and potential contamination could weaken those probabilities, so the interpretation remains contested and subject to further testimony.
03 The Two Intruders | The defence case emerges
Q: Jane asks whether police think the two accused were involved in the earlier robberies in 1997 and 1998, and if they are connected to those incidents.
The police have not established that Joseph Vekony and Steve Fabriczy were responsible for all earlier robberies; there is some association with the 1998 balaclava DNA evidence, but the connection to 1997 remains unclear, leaving doubts about their involvement in those cases.
