The Two Intruders For two decades, Canberra residents have become familiar with signs asking: Who killed Irma? It's a question that stems from a 1999 home invasion, a violent search for cash and valuables which left 72-year-old Irma Palasics dead and her husband Gregor badly beaten. Police have been searching for the two intruders, who left with more than $30,000. Rewards were offered and the Pala... more

  • You know!

Once you notice how often Stocky stitches his sentences together with ‘you know’, you can’t unnotice. Unbearable. If this is your job and you, you know, narrate for a living, you should, you know, actively work to address your vocal tics, instead of just, you know, making us live with it. You know?

  • Wheelie bin reporting

Loved the coverage of the Erin Patterson trial. But as the podcast goes on, it is becoming far less polished. The reporting of the Wheelie bin trial is off-putting. The intermittent giggling of the host and guest sets a poor tone. Why would you joke about where the bin is now and whether the owners would want it back?! Feels really disrespectful to the deceased.

  • Informative, factual only

Initially (for Erin Patterson), the ABC did a good job with a careful and cautious podcast that lays out things factually and avoids speculation or sensationalism. It’s been a very interesting, well-presented, and up-to-date story.

After that initial case, it’s been much less focused, with scattered reporting and much less journalism.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

32 | Late-breaking evidence on Erin's gastric bypass claims
Q: Does the Enrich Clinic offer gastric bypass surgery or pre-assessments for it?
Erin Patterson acknowledged that the clinic does not perform gastric bypass surgery, suggesting the pre-assessment claim was not supported by the clinic's usual services.
10 The Two Intruders | Over to the jury
Q: Is manslaughter something the jury is able to consider if they can't reach a murder verdict?
Yes, manslaughter is an option open to them by joint commission, even though it isn't on the indictment, allowing them to consider it if the elements of murder aren't met.
08 Wheelie Bin Murder | The questions we couldn't answer
Q: What are the implications of a mistrial for the defendants, and how long might a retrial take given court backlogs?
A mistrial triggers a retrial with associated backlogs, often taking years due to court availability and scheduling, which may also raise considerations about bail and continued custody for the accused.
08 Wheelie Bin Murder | The questions we couldn't answer
Q: Why was the term tumultuous used to describe the relationship dynamics, and how do reporters avoid injecting personal bias when not all such language is stated in court?
The term tumultuous was used because it appeared in court filings or openings; reporters must stick to court language and avoid asserting unproven domestic-violence labels unless directly stated in proceedings to prevent influencing the jury.
08 Wheelie Bin Murder | The questions we couldn't answer
Q: How does the jury handle questions during a trial, and what is the process for answering them in a way that maintains fairness?
Questions from the jury are written on notes and given to the judge's associates, who then discuss with counsel and craft an appropriate answer to read to the jury, balancing clarity with the legal boundaries and avoiding prejudicial guidance.
