This has become my new favorite history podcast. Adam discusses each person and topic intelligently and with an openness I find endearing. The subject of Manliness can be a heavy issue today, but I believe Murder Hobos handles it expertly.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Crazy Horse, 1840 - 1877
Q: What shaped Crazy Horse's rise as a leader within Lakota society?
A combination of early mentorship from elder warriors, the meaning of vision quests, and the social institutions like the shirt wearers and Akichita that rewarded valor and discipline, all of which propelled him into leadership roles and made him a symbol of resistant sovereignty.
Pirate Arc Q&A Episode!
Q: How aware were writers at the time of this complexity, and is it really a distinctly modern view to call ships a model for factories?
The speakers explain that while the comparison to factories is more of a later historical interpretation, writers like Marcus Rediker and Adam Smith discussed ship labor and organization in ways that foreshadow later capitalist thought, though contemporaries might not have framed it identically. The idea is that ships demonstrated highly organized labor and capital-intensive production comparable to early industrial systems, even if not labeled as such at the time.
Pirate Arc Q&A Episode!
Q: What does it actually mean that sail ships were the most complicated technology created up until that point?
The answer emphasizes that technology on ships encompasses the entire system: rope construction, rigging, boat design, repair methods, navigation tools, and the human skills needed to operate it all. It's about problem-solving, interdependent components, and institutional knowledge that enable long, complex operations at sea, not just mechanical gizmos.
King Philip Q&A Episode!
Q: So first question, what made King Philip's War one of the hardest episodes to produce, and how did you navigate the historiography?
The era's historiography is complex with many trajectories; the subject spans interlocked events and contested sources, and the fear of simplifying led to a narrative that emphasizes both military detail and the memory politics surrounding the war.
Henry Morgan Q&A Episode!
Q: First thing I want to say, Peter, is I did not say Pirates of the Caribbean was quite accurate in its portrayal. I said it was surprisingly accurate in its portrayal. Here are my arguments...
The film uses Golden Age piracy as a broad canvas, includes historically grounded weapons and locations, and reflects mercantile dynamics, even if timelines aren't exact, making it surprisingly faithful in spirit though not in strict detail.
