  • My Dad was diagnosed as hypomanic at 66yo. He died at 79yo, leaving behind a traumatized wife and severely broken family. I wish we'd known about this option then. Thank heavens for the work you're doing to help these people and their families. A VERY enlightening and hope filled episode.

Talking Points

DIME Trial: New study finds a ketogenic diet may help some with severe depression
Q: Tell us what the study was, what you were looking at, and what you found.
We conducted a six-week, proof-of-concept randomized trial comparing a tightly controlled ketogenic diet against a phytonutrient-rich control diet in people who self-reported treatment-resistant depression. Both groups showed meaningful reductions in PHQ-9 scores, but the difference between groups did not reach the predefined clinically important threshold, though the ketogenic diet did show a modest advantage. Adherence, monitoring methods, and dietetic support all influenced outcomes, and several participants reduced or changed their medications. The study was designed to test for a signal that would justify larger, longer trials.
Ketogenic Therapy for PTSD? New Research Underway
Q: So, I want to get into the details of the study, but first, I mean, this background research that you had to do in the mechanistic paper and looking for what was out there, I mean, that must have been a bit of a challenge because there isn't a lot out there?
Engelhardt highlighted that while some case studies and a few animal studies exist, significant gaps in clinical research on ketogenic therapy for PTSD make his feasibility study crucial for understanding this connection better.
Ketogenic Therapy for PTSD? New Research Underway
Q: What got you interested in exploring PTSD for one and then ketogenic therapy for PTSD?
Dr. Engelhardt shared that he has complex PTSD and experienced significant suffering, which initially led him to explore ketogenic therapy after listening to discussions on dietary interventions for mental health.
The Metabolic Fix for PCOS & Infertility
Q: What is the current treatment for PCOS and how effective is it?
Dr. Palter describes how current treatments primarily address symptoms rather than root causes, highlighting the need for a more holistic approach to care that includes dietary changes.
The Metabolic Fix for PCOS & Infertility
Q: What got you into the field of infertility?
Dr. Palter shares that he was fascinated by the intersection of behavior and medicine since childhood and found reproductive endocrinology appealing for its potential to create new lives and solve complex problems.
