  • Great podcast but…

I think some great topics are covered on this podcast and as an endocrinologist passionate about treating metabolic health I appreciate the progressive approach taken here. That being said I had to stop listening to the Andy Galpin talk 5 minutes in because the arrogance was just so toxic and grating. What a shame because I’ve heard him on many other podcasts and used to enjoy listening to him.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Vagal Nerve Stimulation, TBI, and Brain Health: Rethinking Neurological Care | Dr. Michael Hoffman, MD | The Metabolic Link Ep. 92
Q: What tests do you find most underused in acute neurology, and what would you change about standard care to improve outcomes for brain injury patients?
He stresses the need for rapid cognitive and behavioral assessments, recommends short, targeted test batteries and computerized options like CNS Vital Signs to yield actionable results quickly, and argues against overlong, data-heavy notes.
What's in Your Tap Water? Contaminants, Filtration, and How to Test It | Johnny Pujol | The Metabolic Link Ep. 91
Q: What sample collection strategies are most important to get an accurate picture?
Morning first-draw samples show plumbing-derived contaminants, while representative samples reflect what people actually consume daily; fully purged samples show the source water after running through systems. Combining these insights helps identify both source risks and consumer exposure.
What's in Your Tap Water? Contaminants, Filtration, and How to Test It | Johnny Pujol | The Metabolic Link Ep. 91
Q: How should listeners approach testing their water and choose a testing method?
Start with a core well-water test to cover heavy metals, VOCs, and common contaminants, and then tailor add-ons based on local risks like PFAS or pesticides. Use a two-sample approach: one raw sample from the source and a second sample after filtration representative of what is ingested. Consider geographic data like City Water Project to guide which tests to run.
What's in Your Tap Water? Contaminants, Filtration, and How to Test It | Johnny Pujol | The Metabolic Link Ep. 91
Q: So can you talk about why this is a problem with tap and well water?
The problem is twofold: regulatory levels often allow trace contaminants that may still impact long-term health, and many homes rely on sources that have diverse, changing risk profiles. In wells, there is no centralized disinfection or regulation, so owners bear full responsibility for maintaining safe water and choosing appropriate filtration or treatment.
Rethinking Cognitive Decline: Stimulus, Exercise, and the Aging Brain | Dr. Tommy Wood, MD, PhD | The Metabolic Link Ep. 90
Q: How do you define the maximum cognitive capacity and how is it measured beyond an IQ test?
Maximum cognitive capacity is best viewed as a broad, global sense of one's peak cognitive potential across multiple domains, not just a single IQ score. Education, learning strategies, and varied cognitive challenges raise this capacity by training the brain to engage and adapt, and tests should capture a battery of cognitive functions rather than rely on a single measure.
