  • ditch radio format for podcast

I usually enjoy the show as a way to stay in touch with ME or just to enjoy the topics that aren’t about ME.

My issue with the show is that it’s formatted for the radio. They rush to include as many callers as possible but then cut them off abruptly destroying the chemistry of the call in. The show would be much better as a podcast, which is much more modern and its formatting.

The host is overly eager to re-explain guests, comments. It comes across its very domineering and it’s very difficult ... more

  • Maine Calling is Well Done

Always topics of current interest. Jennifer Rooks has a special gift as moderator keeping the discussion moving and redirecting the discussion when callers and speakers wander off topic.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Maine's Scallop Industry
Q: How does aquaculture fit with the wild scallop fishery in Maine?
Aquaculture adds supply during periods when wild scallops are scarce, can enhance spawning stock biomass through larval release, and offers a distinct, whole-animal product that can coexist with wild harvest.
Maine's Scallop Industry
Q: Tell us what makes Maine scallops so flavorful and expensive.
Flavor and price are driven by freshness, local growing conditions, and the timing of harvest, with day-boat operations preserving texture and avoiding dilution from ice, while supply and demand cycles also push prices up when wild stocks are tight.
Women in Maine: 250 years ago
Q: What was it like to be a woman in Maine 250 years ago?
Women faced hard, often frontier-based domestic labor across coastal and inland Maine, with daily tasks shaped by seasonality, gendered expectations, and limited legal rights, yet they also played critical roles in sustaining families, communities, and political resistance through acts like homespun manufacturing and caregiving.
Henry David Thoreau
Q: How did you sort of assess who you needed to talk to about this, was it just the most known writers or scholars?
They approached it organically, starting with Thoreau's own writings and then building out with a bios of his life, using a core set of scholars, and expanding to contemporary voices to contextualize his ideas for today.
Adulting
Q: What are the main challenges young people face today as they enter adulthood?
Challenges include high housing costs, student debt, balancing work and education, and anxiety about independence and decision-making, with financial literacy and time management as key areas of focus.
