Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

When Community Reaches Its Breaking Point with Evie King
Q: How do you suggest leaders address these challenges without sacrificing mission readiness?
Leaders should prioritize holistic wellness, create feasible boundaries (like limiting after-hours work), remove barriers to care, encourage honest feedback, and support family-centered policies that sustain long-term readiness and well-being.
When Community Reaches Its Breaking Point with Evie King
Q: What are the strongest red flags your research is showing about military family wellness?
Loneliness, anxiety, and depression stand out as pervasive issues, with social support sometimes existing in perception but not in meaningful, daily connection; loneliness and isolation are not fully resolved by virtual formats and require more intimate, in-person community-building efforts.
My Spiritual Mentor: Dr Alice Cullinan
Q: What was your thought behind teaching the psychology of religion and the cults class, and how did you convince the institution to offer these topics?
Cullinan explains her goal of equipping students for real-world ministry with mental, emotional, and spiritual health, and recalls how they navigated institutional barriers to offer innovative courses that prepared students for leadership beyond conventional ministry tracks.
My Spiritual Mentor: Dr Alice Cullinan
Q: What practically kept you from becoming obnoxious yourself?
She emphasizes deep gratitude for her calling, prayerful discernment, and the discipline of walking with God, which helped her avoid self-righteous or aggressive behavior while staying true to her mission.
My Spiritual Mentor: Dr Alice Cullinan
Q: Well, here's the thing, you taught a whole lot of people before you taught us. Maybe share a little bit about your story. What made you want to be a professor in the first place?
Cullinan describes a calling that grew from early church involvement, a gradual realization that she needed to equip others through teaching, and persistence in pursuing higher education (including a PhD) to open teaching doors that were once closed to women.
