  • Peds snd OB episodes

Content-good. Music in the background is distracting.

Peds episode with the hospitalist. The way he talked (about the hospital where he works or in general) it sounded as though medication errors are very common, which would be a major problem. With all the staff members and safety protocols in place, I wonder how the errors aren’t picked up earlier.

  • Mary Jorgenson interview

The podcast sounded more like an oral resume of the guest. Not much knowledge. If I read her resume, I’d wonder why she had so many jobs.

  • Diabetes management

Good presentation about diagnosis/misdiagnosis and management of Type 1 and 2 Diabetes. I do have two comments. First, that people with diabetes should be called “individuals with diabetes rather than diabetics.” Secondly, Pat told an interesting story about a young man away at college who was at a loss as to how access health care. She said he had “irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s Disease.” Crohn’s is “Inflammatory Bowel Disease.”

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

652 – Pediatric ER Nursing: Unique Challenges, Life-Threatening Emergencies, and Legal Implications – Dr. Chelsea Collins
Q: Tell us about the types of pediatric emergencies that are the most critical and what makes them stand out in the ED.
Respiratory emergencies are often the most critical in pediatrics due to their dependence on a fragile airway and immature immune systems, followed closely by fever in neonates that may indicate sepsis or meningitis, all of which require swift evaluation and coordinated care.
652 – Pediatric ER Nursing: Unique Challenges, Life-Threatening Emergencies, and Legal Implications – Dr. Chelsea Collins
Q: And with a changing constant influx of patients and a variety of conditions that have to be addressed, tell us about the role of assessment.
In the pediatric ER, assessments are highly focused on the chief complaint and the patient's current respiratory or circulatory status, with periodic reassessments tied to interventions rather than routine full-head-to-toe checks seen on general floors.
698 – Behind the Curtain: PACU Nursing, Complications, and Legal Risks – Paul Sayegh
Q: Tell us about the Aldrete score. How is that used? What does it mean in the broader scope of things?
The Aldrete score is a standardized recovery assessment tool used in the immediate post-anesthesia period to help clinicians evaluate a patient's recovery, focusing on activity, respiration, circulation, level of consciousness, and oxygen saturation, with a common discharge threshold around a score of nine or higher, while always interpreted in the context of the individual patient and procedure.
657 – The Hidden Power of Audit Trails in Legal Nurse Consulting – Amy Puls
Q: Why is Excel preferred over PDF for audit trails?
Excel preserves all columns and lines so you can filter and search comprehensively; PDFs often truncate data and distort the data structure, making it hard to analyze.
657 – The Hidden Power of Audit Trails in Legal Nurse Consulting – Amy Puls
Q: What exactly is an audit trail and why should attorneys care about it?
An audit trail is a timestamped log of who did what in the electronic health record; it helps verify what occurred, exposes gaps or inconsistencies, and can change case outcomes by revealing actions not visible in the narrative notes.
