Las almas de los pretendientes descienden al inframundo. Ulises se reencuentra con su anciano padre Laertes, y tras un último enfrentamiento, Minerva impone la paz definitiva en Ítaca.

Penélope, cautelosa, pone a prueba a Ulises con el secreto de su lecho nupcial. Al comprobar que solo su verdadero esposo podría conocerlo, finalmente lo reconoce y se reencuentran.

Ulises revela su identidad y, junto a Telémaco y sus fieles servidores, da muerte a todos los pretendientes que habían invadido su palacio.

Penélope propone un concurso: quien logre tensar el arco de Ulises y disparar a través de doce hachas se casará con ella. Ninguno de los pretendientes lo consigue; solo Ulises, aún disfrazado, es capaz de hacerlo.

Se acumulan presagios y tensión en el palacio mientras se acerca el momento decisivo del enfrentamiento entre Ulises y los pretendientes.

Ulises conversa con Penélope sin revelar su identidad. Durante un lavatorio de pies, su vieja nodriza Euriclea lo reconoce al notar la cicatriz de una antigua herida.

Ulises, todavía disfrazado, se enfrenta en una pelea al mendigo Iro dentro del palacio, presenciando de cerca la insolencia y arrogancia de los pretendientes.

Telémaco regresa al palacio. Ulises, aún disfrazado de mendigo, llega también a la ciudad y es reconocido únicamente por Argos, su viejo perro fiel, quien muere de emoción al verlo.
