  • Please don’t podcast together!

Guys I love you and the info you provide but after hearing today’s episode I couldn’t be any more turned off to it. It’s like a little kid listening to mom and dad fight. It’s really awkward and feels like something that should be private and not aired out for everyone to hear. Guys, I’m a big fan but lock in already. You’re trying to promote together in the trades and listen to how the two of you talk to each other. Love you guys but not a fan of the two of you together on here.

  • Essential Listening for Any Landscape or Hardscape Pro

I’ve been in the landscape business for 20 years and own my own company. I discovered this podcast two years ago and it completely changed my perspective. It introduced me to the incredible hardscape community I didn’t even know existed. Working in Florida, this industry can be tough, but hearing from Kid Contractor and all the voices featured on the show makes it feel more like a family you can grow with. Always motivating, always real—keep up the great work, guys!

E733. Instagram Mailbag: Your Hardscape Hiring & Contract Questions Answered
Q: How do you go about hiring and what are some absolute do's or must haves and red flags?
The core is growth mindset, willingness to learn, and not thinking you're the best at your trade. We want people who take responsibility, avoid blaming others, and bring a solid basic skill set with a strong, positive attitude. We also look for reliability, like being able to drive a company truck if needed and being insured, but we're willing to make exceptions in the right circumstances. Ultimately, attitude and reliability trump raw skill when onboarding new teammates.

Q: How do you prevent shiny object syndrome and keep a company focused on its main goal?
Establish a clear Keystone Goal that all initiatives must support, and use it as a filtering tool to decide which projects to keep or drop.
E719. Get More Revenue from Your Revenue: The Metrics Every Small Business Must Track
Q: What are the most important fundamentals of building a good team?
Hire for characteristics first and foremost, then train thoroughly to develop skills, ensuring people are resilient, disciplined, motivated, and coachable.
E717. Stop Selling Products, Start Selling Experiences: Hooking Your Ideal Client
Q: What is the most important piece of marketing for landscapers?
Vehicles—the trucks and fleet—because they are the most visible, owned marketing asset; they must clearly convey name, service, and contact info in a simple, scalable way.

Q: What role do retreats and accountability groups play in your development?
Retreats and accountability groups provide a space to exchange ideas with peers, gain new perspectives, and set tangible goals, which Sam claims as life-changing and business-accelerating.
