  • Kris Boyd for the win

My mother came up with Terry Gross; much as I love her, Kris Boyd is my Terry Gross. I love her every interview. Boyd brings a perfect balance of intelligence and empathy, cutting to the meat of a story with sharp questions and building a rapport with her guests that is deeply impressive. She elevates my week and enriches my mind, in a way that feels like entertainment rather than work. Thanks to KERA’s Think I am constantly learning about subjects way out of my normal range of interests, and th... more

  • great podcast, horrible audio

Can you get a professional audio engineer to oversee your production? The podcast sounds as if the host is under water or speaking into a pillow. Really hard on the ears.

  • Always one sided conversation

I listened 100s of Episodes. Kris is extremely talented on formulating her questions and dissecting a topic and make her guests explain their books or their knowledge to the point where the whole episode could be considered as intelligent book summary. BUT she is always one sided especially anything Palestine anything Gaza anything white vs black anything LGBT anything Democrats over Republicans. She favors blacks over whites, Israelis over Palestinians, sis-man (in her terminology) over queer m... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Should childhood be monetized?
Q: Why did you decide to study the evolution from mom blogs to image-centric platforms in the context of monetization?
The shift to image-centric platforms changed what audiences expect to see and what brands reward, making kids more central to the income equation while also intensifying pressures on families to perform perfection.
Who wants to be an alpha male?
Q: What do these programs consist of and what experiences do participants go through?
Programs typically combine physical challenges, leader-led drills, and group discussions, often culminating in moments of personal disclosure; they are marketed as transformation but vary in oversight and accessibility, sometimes lacking licensed therapeutic support.
Who wants to be an alpha male?
Q: Is it reasonable to see Nick Adams as a deliberate provocation in the president's circle, and what role do such figures play in shaping these movements?
Nick Adams is portrayed as a figure whose online platform and speaking engagements amplify a hard-edged version of masculinity, serving both as a cultural signal and a political provocation that aligns with a broader populist, right-leaning agenda.
Who wants to be an alpha male?
Q: How do the people who claim to be alpha males or want to be alpha males define alpha males?
Definitions vary but often center on confidence, dominance, and physicality, with some attempting to replace nuanced traits with brute force or performance, while others seek blocks of traditional leadership and dominance as markers of masculinity.
The hazards of being in love with love
Q: Paul, generally speaking, you note that the vast majority of our evolution as a species took place in small groups. Why is that significant for understanding how humans ended up with romantic partners?
Small-group dynamics shaped how people met, formed bonds, and invested in offspring, which contrasts with today's vast, resource-rich dating environment. In ancestral settings, selection pressures favored long-term compatibility and shared narratives built over time, rather than instant market signals.
