  • Kris Boyd for the win

My mother came up with Terry Gross; much as I love her, Kris Boyd is my Terry Gross. I love her every interview. Boyd brings a perfect balance of intelligence and empathy, cutting to the meat of a story with sharp questions and building a rapport with her guests that is deeply impressive. She elevates my week and enriches my mind, in a way that feels like entertainment rather than work. Thanks to KERA’s Think I am constantly learning about subjects way out of my normal range of interests, and th... more

  • great podcast, horrible audio

Can you get a professional audio engineer to oversee your production? The podcast sounds as if the host is under water or speaking into a pillow. Really hard on the ears.

  • Always one sided conversation

I listened 100s of Episodes. Kris is extremely talented on formulating her questions and dissecting a topic and make her guests explain their books or their knowledge to the point where the whole episode could be considered as intelligent book summary. BUT she is always one sided especially anything Palestine anything Gaza anything white vs black anything LGBT anything Democrats over Republicans. She favors blacks over whites, Israelis over Palestinians, sis-man (in her terminology) over queer m... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Is the world setting you up for failure?
Q: How do healthcare systems differ between the US and UK, and what does that say about systemic approaches?
The discussion highlights that universal healthcare with safety nets tends to alter behavior and outcomes differently than highly privatized systems, suggesting the value of systemic design while acknowledging that individual freedom and financial constraints still play a role in outcomes.
Is the world setting you up for failure?
Q: Why have nudges not lived up to their initial promise in policy impact?
Because published successes are often biased toward positive results, long-term effects are typically small or fade over time, and even practitioners within nudge programs acknowledge that real-world impact is limited and context-dependent.
Is the world setting you up for failure?
Q: What motivates the shift from an I-frame to an S-frame perspective in analyzing social problems?
The guests explain that shifting from focusing on individual choices to examining the rules, incentives, and institutions that shape those choices allows us to see why problems persist and where policy can be most effective, even if it means changing the broader system.
How vulnerability strengthens relationships
Q: Is there a good way to respond when somebody over shares with us?
Responses should depend on the relationship and aim. Validate the feelings, listen more than try to fix, and acknowledge the person's experience rather than immediately offering solutions.
How vulnerability strengthens relationships
Q: Tell us about this dating game study that you devised.
The study compared two dating scenarios: one where a dater reveals negative information and another where they refuse to answer. People consistently preferred the revealers, suggesting trust and perceived honesty matter more than protecting oneself from vulnerability.
