从南宋之前的无名支流，到明代“黄浦夺淞”后成为太湖流域的主流水系，再到明清两代成为江南地区的漕运和对外贸易枢纽，黄浦江用了600多年的时间，从一条不起眼的小河，逐渐成为上海的“母亲河”。而随着上海开埠，从1843年的泥泞荒滩，到20世纪30年代的“东方华尔街”，外滩用了不到100年的时间，完成了从荒滩到繁华都市核心的蜕变。
