  • Great unifying voices

This podcast so far has been just what I was looking for in this season of Lent: Christian voices that emphasize Christ over all, even—gasp—politics! What would it mean for the diverse and polarized church to find common ground at the foot of the cross? The daylight between me and Christians I disagree with politically is nothing compared to the debt Jesus has forgiven in me.

Made to Belong: Rethinking Spiritual Formation with David Kim
Q: How does the integration of spiritual formation show up in your teaching and church practices?
Formation should permeate all church life, not just a program; collaboration with leadership to embed practices in teaching, small groups, and calendar rhythms demonstrates a unified, embodied approach to formation.
Made to Belong: Rethinking Spiritual Formation with David Kim
Q: Can you unpack five practices to cultivate true belonging that you describe in your book?
He outlines five practices: priority, chemistry, vulnerability, empathy, and accountability, stressing a progression from showing up and building trust to deeper intimate sharing, while avoiding awkward or unsafe vulnerability.
Made to Belong: Rethinking Spiritual Formation with David Kim
Q: What shaped you along your journey into pastoral ministry?
He attributes his calling to his dad, a pastor, but emphasizes a long process of forming his own faith beyond his father's, highlighting joy in seeing people experience God's love and the pain of suffering that shapes leadership humble through trials.
Made to Belong: Rethinking Spiritual Formation with David Kim
Q: So speaking of that, for those that don't know David Kim, how would you introduce yourself these days? Who is the man, the mystery, the enigma that is David Kim?
David frames himself as a Jesus follower and a family man, who loves food and pickleball, and who serves as Executive Pastor of Discipleship and Formation at Westgate Church while also coaching with Practicing the Way, bringing a practical, community-centered approach to spiritual formation.
