  • I usually don't listen to the intro episodes of podcasts. They're often fluff. I happened to download this one and enjoyed all 7 minutes. Jesse does a great job articulating the focus of the podcast and his approach. Better, he acknowledges some quirks and indulges in one (which made me laugh out loud). I love that he is studied in behavioural economics and brings that to bear for climbing. I've gone ahead and downloaded the AMA episodes and look forward to catching up.

  • Fresh direction for a climbing podcast

Wasn’t sure Jesse could bring something new to the table with so many climbing podcasts out, but I was so wrong. I love his attempt to bring subject matter experts that are also climbers on to discuss what we definitively know and don’t know about what research is telling us, and at the same time brings a pragmatic perspective about what people should be taking away. Just thoughtful discussion that never loses itself in the weeds. Keep it up!

  • High quality climbing content

A welcome addition and compliment to the other climbing pods out there, Jesse cuts through the noise (and gloss), and delivers content that’s endearingly unpolished in production, yet very honed in product. Add this one to your lineup, it’s sure to provide many hours of insights and inspo.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#39 - May AMA
Q: Jackbug Nugster asks how coaching has changed the host's views on climbing.
Coaching has made him more compassionate toward climbers of all levels, reinforced the importance of mental health and balance, and allowed him to enjoy teaching through clinics and personal growth alongside high-level performance.
#39 - May AMA
Q: Ryan asks how to stay motivated when autoimmune disorders flare and how to auto-regulate training during difficult times.
He describes auto-regulation as essential, adjusting volume and sessions based on how the body feels, and emphasizes broader lifestyle adjustments (sleep, diet, stress management) to support training resilience.
#39 - May AMA
Q: Cian asks how font grades vs V-scale affect perception of climbing progress.
He discusses how different grading systems influence goals and motivation, noting that accurately mapping progress between scales is nuanced; many climbers chase “nice round numbers” like V10 or 8A, but these mappings aren't perfect across scales and regions.
#39 - May AMA
Q: Steven asks about best practices for finding climbing partners while traveling and solo climbing in ten sleep.
The host shares practical travel tips, such as planning to climb at popular crags, using online partner finding tools, and being prepared for partnerships with a wide range of experience. He also advises staying within your abilities at first and learning from others, with a lighthearted note on social approaches like bringing cookies to campsites.
#39 - May AMA
Q: Jantina asks how often to chalk and whether chalking too much hurts performance.
Chalk should be used to manage moisture, not to artificially increase friction; excessive chalk can hinder grip and pacing. The host emphasizes pacing, friction awareness, and adjusting chalk use to conditions, rather than chalking on every move or resting while chalking.
