  • I usually don't listen to the intro episodes of podcasts. They're often fluff. I happened to download this one and enjoyed all 7 minutes. Jesse does a great job articulating the focus of the podcast and his approach. Better, he acknowledges some quirks and indulges in one (which made me laugh out loud). I love that he is studied in behavioural economics and brings that to bear for climbing. I've gone ahead and downloaded the AMA episodes and look forward to catching up.

  • Fresh direction for a climbing podcast

Wasn’t sure Jesse could bring something new to the table with so many climbing podcasts out, but I was so wrong. I love his attempt to bring subject matter experts that are also climbers on to discuss what we definitively know and don’t know about what research is telling us, and at the same time brings a pragmatic perspective about what people should be taking away. Just thoughtful discussion that never loses itself in the weeds. Keep it up!

  • High quality climbing content

A welcome addition and compliment to the other climbing pods out there, Jesse cuts through the noise (and gloss), and delivers content that’s endearingly unpolished in production, yet very honed in product. Add this one to your lineup, it’s sure to provide many hours of insights and inspo.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

# 33 - Rocco Bocchicchio
Q: What motivates you now, after all these years?
Developing new lines and contributing to the climbing landscape remains the core motivation, along with the joy of helping others succeed and sharing the journey with friends and partners, while balancing family life and aging."
# 33 - Rocco Bocchicchio
Q: How long have you been climbing, and how did you get into it?
I've been climbing for about 28 years, starting in New Jersey with bouldering being new at the time; I moved into the Gunks and NE climbing culture, did a lot of ground-up development, and gradually shifted toward open-ended exploration and mentorship in various regions.
# 33 - Rocco Bocchicchio
Q: Tell us where you are right now.
I'm in Joe's Valley, in Castledale near Orangeville, living in a shuttle bus with my wife and two dogs, training at a small shop that doubles as a workspace, and working on skincare products with her from local plants.
#34 - March AMA
Q: What about ethics in development of bouldering areas and trail-building?
Follow local ethics and aim to do no harm; avoid damaging rock, plants, or terrain, prefer minimal, well-posed landings that blend with the environment, and seek to minimize erosion and visual impact; engage with local guidelines and trail-building best practices.
#34 - March AMA
Q: How did you manage strategies on your climbing trip with your kid, and what would you bring into other sessions?
Execution and visualization practices proved valuable even in chaotic conditions with a baby; after the baby is put to sleep, he uses visualization to rehearse attempts, and in distracted moments, maintaining execution focus is crucial; this approach translates to general climbing sessions whenever distractions occur.
