  • Balm & light

This podcast is both a balm for the stressed, weary writer’s soul and a light to keep writing. Rachael’s voice, her insights and guests provide exactly what I need as a writer - to know I’m not doing it wrong and encouragement to write one more word.

  • Especially grateful today…

I’ve been a listener for a few months now, my first memoir was published a year ago. Last night I saw my first one star review on Goodreads and it put me in a bad space. On today’s episode you talked about negative reviews and you said something along the lines of caring less about the one star reviews and more about the thoughtful two and three star reviews. It was exactly what I needed to hear to change my perspective. Thank you so much for the time you put into this podcast.

  • Amazing podcast for writers

There are so few successful writers who are willing to pull back the curtain on the writing life, so I feel very grateful to Rachael for doing just that. Guests are working writers who reveal personal specifics about habits, struggles and best practices. There are also solo episodes (my fave) where Rachael answers listeners’ questions. These are basically mini-masterclasses.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why Flow is Overrated, with Rebecca Hunter
Q: What is the best writing craft tip you'd like to share with listeners?
The tip shared is that flow is overrated; focus on separating your experience of writing from the reader's experience, keep reader-first in mind, and avoid overfocusing on how hard the writing process feels, as this can mislead about the final reader experience.
Why Flow is Overrated, with Rebecca Hunter
Q: Can you tell us about your writing process? What does it look like nowadays? Where do you do it? How do you do it? How does it work for you?
Hunter describes a low-tech, iterative process centered on dictation walks to generate 1,500–2,000 words, followed by morning self-edits and repeated cycles of drafting and printing to refine plot and emotional arc, with a strong emphasis on separating divergent thinking from convergent editing.
The Life-Changing Magic of Risk-Taking, with Jessica Payne
Q: Can you tell us about Somebody Worth Killing?
Jessica Payne explains that the novel centers on Nadia, a mom and wife who is secretly an assassin. After being mommy-tracked and denied access to bigger jobs, Nadia is forced to confront who her husband really is and decide between her dangerous career and the life she has built.
The BEST Reading Tip to Strengthen Your Writing, with Laurie Frankel
Q: What is the most exciting thing you've discovered about your writing process?
That the process can get better over time, and that a project can shift from feeling broken to working as the characters start making decisions on their own, which feels like a life-affirming miracle.
The BEST Reading Tip to Strengthen Your Writing, with Laurie Frankel
Q: Can you please tell people a little bit about what the book is about?
It's about a 77-year-old grandmother who moves into a retirement community, falls in love, becomes pregnant after a diagnosis that isn't accurate, and then the book explores the big questions this raises about life, aging, love, and society.
