Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Whole Milk in Schools: Dairy Checkoff at Work in the Classroom
Q: What resources are available to help dairy farmers share the message about whole milk in schools?
Farmers can directly contact their local school districts and leverage resources from local checkoff programs to provide information and support for implementing whole milk options in cafeterias.
A Million Reasons Why Conformation Matters: with Dr. Jeffrey Bewley
Q: Are there any other specific traits or findings that came to mind that you thought were surprising or particularly useful for dairy producers when considering breeding decisions?
The overall message is that confirmation matters for cows to produce a lot of milk over a long period, with utter traits and feet-and-legs traits driving most of the economically important outcomes; stature can be a caveat since taller cows may produce more in the first lactation but stay longer-term if body conformation is well balanced.
Passion, Focus & Good People: with Tim Rauen
Q: Tim, take us back to the beginning of your involvement with the Holstein Cow. How did you get your start at a young age?
I grew up on family farms in rural Iowa, spent weekends and weeknights helping with chores, and developed a lasting passion for Holsteins through early experiences with organ animals and family support.
It’s Not Just the Cows, It’s the People: with Tom Morris
Q: So Tom, what were your first couple of jobs after college and how did they allow you to share your passion for the dairy industry with others?
After graduating, I started at Northwood's Technical Institute where I helped design the first post-secondary nine-month dairy herdsmanship program. I worked with young instructors to build a program that attracted students from across the USA and Canada, emphasizing practical hands-on experience and industry engagement.
From Juniors to Leaders: A Junior Holstein Association USA Spotlight with Jon Chapman, Madison Mowrer, and Madeline Hensel
Q: What advice would you leave for other Junior Holstein members?
Take every opportunity, don't be afraid to try new things, and get out there to meet new people; building friendships and connections is as valuable as any contest or award.
