Do not let people bully you into speaking out against speaking on your own opinions! I truly enjoy the historical context in which you put current events such as the witch hunt episode. People do like seeing the truth of our reality which is getting grim.

  • Good but…

I really do enjoy listening to to the history side of this podcast. As someone who did not enjoy history while in school I have enjoyed being able to listen to various podcasts to learn more about things that I brushed by in school. However, I am not crazy about the current political intrusions during a past history discussion. Not judging anyone by whichever side they believe but I want to hear the history not personal opinions or interjections during that. I do follow on instagram and enjoy se... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep 156 Comfort Women: How 200,000 Women Were Forced Into Sexual Slavery by the Japanese Government
Q: Can you give a brief overview of Chinese comfort women during World War II?
Jenny explains that Chinese women were conscripted into military brothels, with Shanghai as an early example, and that the system had clear tiers and was meant to control sexual violence while servicing soldiers.
Ep. 148 Writing: How the Written Word Quietly Shaped Civilization
Q: Were there any other women who wrote any other books?
There might have been, but we didn't even know Murasaki Shikibu's name. There were likely other women writing, but their works may not have been recognized or recorded.
Ep. 148 Writing: How the Written Word Quietly Shaped Civilization
Q: How much time does it take you to learn all this before you do that?
Honestly, I've tried not to keep track of it because it's too much. I think I'm particularly skilled at cramming information in a short period of time and synthesizing it into a story.
Ep. 148 Writing: How the Written Word Quietly Shaped Civilization
Q: Is this how you typically do your podcast?
No, this was definitely a lot more improvised too. I usually when I do it, I have at least a rough script that I'm basing it off of.
Ep. 142 Pearl Harbor: Why Japan Attacked Pearl Harbor, Seemingly Out of Left Field, and Involved Itself in World War II
Q: What was Japan's motivation for bombing Pearl Harbor?
Japan's motivation stemmed from the desire to prevent the US Pacific Fleet from intervening in their attempts to expand into Southeast Asia, as they faced resource shortages due to an extended conflict in China.
