  • Ads Louder than the Content

I don’t necessarily mind ads, but I will not listen to the content when the ads are significantly louder than the content, as they are here. Too bad.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Paul Kennedy's Prophecy
Q: Jeremi, tell us why this was so provocative.
Kennedy's thesis argued that large powers inevitably face decline as their commitments outpace their capabilities; the discussion highlights how that framework helps explain debates in the 1980s and why policymakers struggled to reverse decline when faced with mounting debt and strategic challenges.
What is Greater Israel?
Q: Let me ask you a question, though, Ian. What was driving that? You said it wasn't necessarily religious. It could have a biblical root. Was it geopolitical? Was it ideological?
The drivers were a mix: a sustained nationalist push to reclaim land believed to be historically theirs, combined with pragmatic political calculation about borders, security, and the need for a viable Jewish homeland. Ideology and scripture provided a justificatory framework, but strategic considerations and reactions to external threats and opportunities shaped the course.
Where's Russia?
Q: Where's Russia?
Russia's influence in the Middle East has waxed and waned across decades, with a historically prestige-driven approach, varying alliances, and a recent withdrawal of capacity due to the Ukraine war, limiting its ability to shape events in the region.
Bonus Ep! Kharg Island, Carter, Khomeini, and 'Eagle Claw'
Q: I want you to give us the encyclopedia entry version of the hostage crisis origins.
Suri outlines how revolutionary fervor, the Shah's fall, and distrust of American interference converged, leading to the storming of the U.S. Embassy and the long hostage ordeal that followed, emphasizing that the core issues were a repudiation of U.S. influence and a demand for a new Iranian political order.
You Say You Want a Coalition?
Q: But Professor Engel, how does Bush go from, well, who cares about Kuwait, to we now have to get an international coalition to expel Saddam Hussein from Kuwait militarily?
Engel explains that Bush and his advisors framed the conflict as a test of the post–Cold War system, emphasizing UN legitimacy, international law, and coalition-building to prevent a unilateral action while ensuring a broad, multilateral effort.
