  • AI could do this better

The most peculiar thing about ideologues (and centrist liberals who believe themselves to be non-ideological are the greatest example of this) is how dependably predictable their minds are. History, facts, electoral results, etc… that contradict their ideological positions can always be contextualized as the exception that proves the rule or brushed away as “agree to disagree (but ultimately I’m right wink, wink)”. A little policy nudge here, a think tank report there, sprinkle a light regulatio... more

  • Thoughtfully refreshing

Rapidly becoming one of my favorite podcasts. He brings on very thoughtful guests and is, himself, conscientious and an adroit host.

  • Just one thing!

You are a well informed fellow and you interview interesting people. But you have a terrible habit of interrupting your guests, to give a long winded opinion of your own, when we really wanted to hear what the guest was going to say. You would improve your podcast a hundred fold by quitting the verbose interruptions. Otherwise you could quit having guests and just do opinion pieces.

  • David Leonhardt

This episode was by far the best explanation of the link between immigration and the rise of the far right I have heard across my rather excessive political podcast listening. The example of Denmark as a country that has managed to see off the right, by in part neutralising the immigration issue. Many thanks Yascha

  • Kevin Mitchell podcast

This particular podcast was somewhat irritating. Mitchell was no more convincing in the podcast than his book was.

Yascha tried to gently and patiently push back on Mitchell’s dismissive attitude towards the determinist camp, but with little effect.

Mitchell again lays out (well), how determinism exists and functions in simple systems… it that at some point magic happens, and the “I” becomes responsible.

Complexity is an insufficient argument for free will. As with his book, Mitchell actual... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Michael Shermer on Truth and Conspiracy
Q: How do you distinguish between realistic and fringe conspiracy theories, and what criteria guide your evaluation?
He argues that the number of people involved, the level of organization, the presence of a clear paper trail or whistleblower, and the ability of mainstream science to explain the claims all matter; if a theory cannot match the explanatory power of the accepted theory plus its anomalies, it is less credible.
Michael Shermer on Truth and Conspiracy
Q: What do you think are the warning signs for smart people who might be slipping into conspiracy thinking?
Shermer describes a conspiracy-detection kit as a four-quadrant signal framework, emphasizing fallibilism and the need to weigh evidence without jumping to absolutes; gradual shifts in belief occur when one overrelies on anomalies or insufficient positive evidence, rather than building coherent explanations.
Kathleen Stock on the Case Against Assisted Death
Q: What concerns does Stock raise about the international trend toward broader access to assisted death?
She points to cases where non-terminal illnesses, mental health, or social factors lead to euthanasia, highlighting risks of coercion, abuse, and the erosion of social norms around medicine and care.
Kathleen Stock on the Case Against Assisted Death
Q: What is the basic liberal argument for allowing assisted death?
Stock summarizes that the liberal case rests on autonomy and the right to decide one's own body, but she argues that when framed as state-provided assistance rather than mere non-interference, the argument becomes incoherent and dangerous.
David Autor on the Scars That Money Can’t Heal
Q: Is it possible for AI to fundamentally disrupt labor markets in the same way as past technological revolutions, or will there be a more moderated transition?
He discusses the potential for a bifurcated future where some tasks are automated while others require uniquely human capabilities, and notes that the transition could be slower or more complex depending on policy responses and the distribution of gains.
