  • Thoughtfully refreshing

Rapidly becoming one of my favorite podcasts. He brings on very thoughtful guests and is, himself, conscientious and an adroit host.

  • Just one thing!

You are a well informed fellow and you interview interesting people. But you have a terrible habit of interrupting your guests, to give a long winded opinion of your own, when we really wanted to hear what the guest was going to say. You would improve your podcast a hundred fold by quitting the verbose interruptions. Otherwise you could quit having guests and just do opinion pieces.

This episode was by far the best explanation of the link between immigration and the rise of the far right I have heard across my rather excessive political podcast listening. The example of Denmark as a country that has managed to see off the right, by in part neutralising the immigration issue. Many thanks Yascha

  • Kevin Mitchell podcast

This particular podcast was somewhat irritating. Mitchell was no more convincing in the podcast than his book was.

Yascha tried to gently and patiently push back on Mitchell’s dismissive attitude towards the determinist camp, but with little effect.

Mitchell again lays out (well), how determinism exists and functions in simple systems… it that at some point magic happens, and the “I” becomes responsible.

Complexity is an insufficient argument for free will. As with his book, Mitchell actual... more

  • Uninteresting

I get it. I know why black republicans are super popular on the right. But Coleman Hughes has such thin ideas. I swear I was able to finish half of his sentences, because no matter the question he responds the same. How can you claim to be a critique of some of the most thoughtful, researched, intelligent, and insightful white, black, Indian, and Jewish race scholars in this country when you yourself constantly claim not having any answers or personal theories of your own.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ibram X. Kendi on Great Replacement Theory
Q: How do you describe the chain of ideas that links disparate political movements across different countries?
It is a unified theory—Great Replacement Theory—that frames a global threat in which elites use demographic change to replace the dominant population, and this framework helps explain why otherwise unrelated movements share rhetoric.
A Very Brief Interview with Klaus Schwab
Q: How do you envision democracy functioning alongside rapid globalization and the speed of change without losing public trust?
The host and Schwab discuss the need to modernize democratic processes to be more adaptive, transparent, and participatory, while reinforcing trust through shared truths and responsible leadership, rather than blaming media alone for misinformation.
A Very Brief Interview with Klaus Schwab
Q: Explain to listeners what you mean by the trilemma and which part of it we should choose if we must give up one value.
Schwab argues there is a tension between fast action, flexible governance, and democratic legitimacy; the guest suggests choosing balance and robustness in institutions rather than sacrificing core democratic values, with the host pushing for clarity on which elements of globalization and democracy can be preserved together.
Shashank Joshi on Why the War in the Middle East Won’t End Anytime Soon
Q: How is this war going for the United States and for Israel?
Joshi explains that while military actions have achieved operational success in degrading some of Iran's capabilities, the political objectives of the US and Israel remain unclear and the broader strategic gains are uncertain, with long-term stability being a major concern.
Danielle Allen on Why Technocratic Liberalism Failed
Q: What would success look like 25 or 50 years from now if things have improved?
She outlines a path where civic education, democratic design, and localized experimentation lead to a more participatory, well-governed society that outgrows current institutional fatigue.
