  • Just one thing!

You are a well informed fellow and you interview interesting people. But you have a terrible habit of interrupting your guests, to give a long winded opinion of your own, when we really wanted to hear what the guest was going to say. You would improve your podcast a hundred fold by quitting the verbose interruptions. Otherwise you could quit having guests and just do opinion pieces.

This episode was by far the best explanation of the link between immigration and the rise of the far right I have heard across my rather excessive political podcast listening. The example of Denmark as a country that has managed to see off the right, by in part neutralising the immigration issue. Many thanks Yascha

  • Kevin Mitchell podcast

This particular podcast was somewhat irritating. Mitchell was no more convincing in the podcast than his book was.

Yascha tried to gently and patiently push back on Mitchell’s dismissive attitude towards the determinist camp, but with little effect.

Mitchell again lays out (well), how determinism exists and functions in simple systems… it that at some point magic happens, and the “I” becomes responsible.

Complexity is an insufficient argument for free will. As with his book, Mitchell actual... more

  • Uninteresting

I get it. I know why black republicans are super popular on the right. But Coleman Hughes has such thin ideas. I swear I was able to finish half of his sentences, because no matter the question he responds the same. How can you claim to be a critique of some of the most thoughtful, researched, intelligent, and insightful white, black, Indian, and Jewish race scholars in this country when you yourself constantly claim not having any answers or personal theories of your own.

    I honestly can’t beli... more

  • Getting Lazy

I have been a big fan of this podcast for several years. I have appreciated Yascha’s willingness to talk about the uncritical nature of the identity politics-branch of the left. This was very helpful 3-5 years ago. Now the thinking seems to have ossified around Yascha’s book and detached from the moment. Talking about gender pronouns with James McWhorter seems lazy and, worse, boring given the upheaval of our time.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Dan Wang on China and the United States
Q: Do you think that is a recipe for ongoing economic growth and affluence?
China's current trajectory of focusing on production rather than consumption may hinder long-term economic stability, as it lacks robust redistribution systems.
Dan Wang on China and the United States
Q: How is that true and what does that tell us about China?
China is termed an engineering state because its political elite, historically educated in engineering, emphasizes treating physical and economic environments as engineering challenges, allowing for rapid infrastructure and industrial growth.
Dan Wang on China and the United States
Q: What do you mean by that and how could that help us illuminate the political tensions between China and the US?
The contrast between the lawyerly society of America and the engineering state of China helps explain the political tensions, as America's legal focus often obstructs rapid development, while China's engineering mindset emphasizes building and executing projects.
Shadi Hamid on Why We Need American Power
Q: What made you change your mind about American power?
Shadi explains that his experiences during and after 9/11, including his active participation in the anti-war movement, led him to initially view American power critically. However, he later recognized that American power is a reality that should be wielded for good.
Lulu Meservey on How Media Has Changed
Q: What advice would you give to a political candidate struggling to communicate effectively?
Lulu suggests candidates need to embrace directness and authenticity, avoiding overly scripted responses.
