Great guest, and topics… however Yascha should talk less and listen more.

  • AI could do this better

The most peculiar thing about ideologues (and centrist liberals who believe themselves to be non-ideological are the greatest example of this) is how dependably predictable their minds are. History, facts, electoral results, etc… that contradict their ideological positions can always be contextualized as the exception that proves the rule or brushed away as “agree to disagree (but ultimately I’m right wink, wink)”. A little policy nudge here, a think tank report there, sprinkle a light regulatio... more

Rapidly becoming one of my favorite podcasts. He brings on very thoughtful guests and is, himself, conscientious and an adroit host.

  • Just one thing!

You are a well informed fellow and you interview interesting people. But you have a terrible habit of interrupting your guests, to give a long winded opinion of your own, when we really wanted to hear what the guest was going to say. You would improve your podcast a hundred fold by quitting the verbose interruptions. Otherwise you could quit having guests and just do opinion pieces.

This episode was by far the best explanation of the link between immigration and the rise of the far right I have heard across my rather excessive political podcast listening. The example of Denmark as a country that has managed to see off the right, by in part neutralising the immigration issue. Many thanks Yascha

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

David Bromwich on Why Americans Have Lost Faith in Universities
Q: What changes does the committee propose to rebuild trust?
Proposals include making admissions criteria more transparent, possibly using more objective metrics like standardized exams, reducing overreliance on holistic assessments, and curbing grade inflation to restore credibility in the grading and admissions processes.
David Bromwich on Why Americans Have Lost Faith in Universities
Q: What are the core findings of the Yale faculty committee on trust in higher education?
The discussion emphasizes opacity in admissions and tuition, grade inflation, and a growing disconnect between the price of elite education and the perceived value; it also analyzes political conformity and the need for a clearer mission focused on merit and knowledge transmission.
Samuel Moyn on Why Old People Are Ruining America
Q: What reforms does Moyn propose beyond mere discussion of age limits?
Moyn discusses age limits (proposed around 70), youth quotas, reforms to campaign finance, and a more flexible approach to equality in voting that could reflect life expectancy or stake in the political system, though he notes the need for cautious, non-neoliberal implementation.
Samuel Moyn on Why Old People Are Ruining America
Q: Why not consider a system where younger people have more influence or even multiple votes based on age?
The host challenges the idea by arguing such a system could undermine democratic equality and lead to naked interest-group politics, while Moyn contends that any reform must still grapple with the realities of representation, legitimacy, and non-neutral mechanisms.
Samuel Moyn on Why Old People Are Ruining America
Q: What evidence supports the claim that old people are ruling in Congress and the White House today?
The guest points to the aging of the presidency since Reagan, the longevity of justices, and the overall age profile of political leadership, arguing that power concentrates among an older demographic due to incumbency, fundraising networks, and delayed entry into politics.
