Great guest, and topics… however Yascha should talk less and listen more.

  • AI could do this better

The most peculiar thing about ideologues (and centrist liberals who believe themselves to be non-ideological are the greatest example of this) is how dependably predictable their minds are. History, facts, electoral results, etc… that contradict their ideological positions can always be contextualized as the exception that proves the rule or brushed away as “agree to disagree (but ultimately I’m right wink, wink)”. A little policy nudge here, a think tank report there, sprinkle a light regulatio... more

Rapidly becoming one of my favorite podcasts. He brings on very thoughtful guests and is, himself, conscientious and an adroit host.

  • Just one thing!

You are a well informed fellow and you interview interesting people. But you have a terrible habit of interrupting your guests, to give a long winded opinion of your own, when we really wanted to hear what the guest was going to say. You would improve your podcast a hundred fold by quitting the verbose interruptions. Otherwise you could quit having guests and just do opinion pieces.

This episode was by far the best explanation of the link between immigration and the rise of the far right I have heard across my rather excessive political podcast listening. The example of Denmark as a country that has managed to see off the right, by in part neutralising the immigration issue. Many thanks Yascha

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Steve Stewart-Williams on Sex Differences and Human Nature
Q: How do differences in attraction and mate choices fit into the evolutionary framework?
Most men are primarily attracted to women and most women to men, with exceptions; these patterns align with differences in parental investment and long-term mating strategies described by evolutionary theory, while acknowledging that distributions have overlaps and exceptions that complicate stereotypes.
Steve Stewart-Williams on Sex Differences and Human Nature
Q: What are the main categories of sex differences, and which is the most controversial?
There are three broad categories: large, dimorphic biological differences; differences that are common-but-subtle statistical variations; and smaller, context-dependent differences that still influence real-world outcomes, with the third category carrying the most controversy because of how it affects social beliefs and policies.
James Traub on Why American Classrooms Are Failing Democracy
Q: What role do classical schools play, and can their approach be scaled nationwide?
Classical schools are public or charter schools that emphasize books, vocabulary, and rigorous inquiry. The guest suggests these models lead to deeper conversations and stronger reading skills, and they could be generalized as a form of liberal education that raises the level of intellectual engagement.
James Traub on Why American Classrooms Are Failing Democracy
Q: Are American schools doing a good job of educating future citizens? What do they teach about American history?
The guest argues that the core issue isn't simply the content (left-wing vs right-wing narratives) but pedagogy and the ability of students to engage with complex texts, stressing that many students struggle with reading comprehension and meaningful discussion unless taught through a richer, classical curriculum.
Al Roth on Why People Should Be Free to Sell Their Kidneys
Q: Should we abolish any limit on buying and selling kidneys and allow a broader market?
Roth argues that while a fully laissez-faire market is not advisable, starting with targeted, limited experiments (e.g., government payment for donations and non-directed donors) could help test generation of more transplants while building safeguards; broader programs could be considered if small experiments prove safe and effective.
