  • Aways excellent podcasts

Great to hear the wonderful & brave Ric Esther Bienstock, especially after having just watched her fascinating documentary ‘Speechless’, which left me speechless. Thank you.

  • Catching a serial killer

Potentially interesting subject and the guest is a good talker, but the presenter needs a little help. Some voice training. Better research so the guest isn’t correcting you on the basics. Most important of all, short, single idea questions. No more than 10-15 seconds — thirty to forty five words. At one point after a lengthy meander the guest had to admit she didn’t know what she’d just been asked. If you would like people to pay for your content, it needs to be made professionally.

  • Fix the website

I get emails from quillette with articles, but to read them I need to click on “read now“ a link to quillette.com which simply cannot be opened. I just get a white page. Are the thought police censoring quillette, or is the website taken down and the emails Phishing? Podcast is good though.

  • The background music during monologues neither sets tone nor enhances. It is quite distracting, actually.

  • Iona italia

Used to listen but stopped due to Iona Italian’s insipid delivery. From the other reviews, I see that I’m not the only one.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why the Enlightenment Matters
Q: Why must we consider the limits of reason and the role of dissent in the Enlightenment?
The conversation stresses that acknowledging the limits of reason prevents dogmatism, supports tolerance for opposing views, and enables the discarding of bad ideas without violence—foundational to modern liberal societies.
Why the Enlightenment Matters
Q: How do you assess Tom Holland's idea that the Enlightenment wouldn't have been possible without Christianity, and that modern morals are rooted in Christian thought?
Pinker's stance is nuanced: he finds the idea persuasive in parts but argues the shift in thinking was so large that it cannot be entirely attributed to Christianity alone; he acknowledges Christian influence but emphasizes broader intellectual and institutional changes.
The Case Against State-Sanctioned Euthanasia
Q: How do you view the relationship between autonomy and compassion in this debate?
Stock argues that autonomy is powerful but insufficient on its own; compassion must be balanced with caution about the societal message of normalizing euthanasia and the potential harm to vulnerable groups, while emphasizing the need to strengthen palliative care and social supports.
The Case Against State-Sanctioned Euthanasia
Q: So very serious subject and you derived the title of your book from Dylan Thomas, a 1951 poem. Can you tell us a little bit about that?
Kathleen Stock explains that the title signals a polemic about resisting the institutionalization of assisted death, not a general admonition to fight aging. She uses the poem as a literary touchstone to frame a nuanced discussion about the end of life and the ethics of society's approach to death.
Has the Gay Rights Revolution Gone Too Far for the Gay Community’s Own Good?
Q: Why did you title your book The End of the Gay Rights Revolution, and what broader changes do you see driving shifts in support?
He argues that shifts are driven by broader political realignments, migration patterns, religious conservatism, and the interplay between secularization and traditional values, which together could erode broad-based support for expansive LGBTQ+ rights over time.
