Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Great Executives Are The Exception, Not The Rule
Q: What final thoughts would you like to leave listeners with about succession planning and leadership readiness?
Succession planning has become timely and essential; organizations should continuously assess and prepare the next generation of leaders, ensuring that critical roles have ready successors. This involves evaluating the C-suite and broader organization for readiness, planning for contingencies, and investing in development so that when a leadership transition occurs, the organization thrives rather than stumbles.
Great Executives Are The Exception, Not The Rule
Q: How should credit unions approach cybersecurity readiness, especially with rising threats and the potential for AI-enabled attacks?
Institutions should routinely exercise incident response plans, run tabletop exercises (including AI-related scenarios), and train every employee from tellers to executives in recognizing phishing and social engineering. The emphasis is on people and processes as the primary vulnerabilities, ensuring quick, coordinated communication and action when incidents occur, and maintaining an ongoing, evolving AI-appropriate policy and access controls.
Great Executives Are The Exception, Not The Rule
Q: What are the biggest opportunities and risks if credit unions gain custody of digital assets for members?
The opportunity lies in expanding payments infrastructure and offering alternative, efficient transaction channels that can increase deposits and member engagement. The risk is misallocating focus on custody itself rather than leveraging the broader crypto ecosystem for payments, identity, and interoperability; regulation still centers on the use and servicing of stablecoins via subsidiaries or fintechs, not on custody by the credit union itself.
Great Executives Are The Exception, Not The Rule
Q: What does it take to be a great CIO right now, and how does that compare to being a CEO or CFO?
The core traits are similar across C-suite roles: leading with trust, seeking input from staff and external truth, and making direction-setting decisions with buy-in from the team. A CEO, however, often faces more diplomacy and board management, which requires reading the room and ensuring the board is well-informed before decisions are made. The main difference lies in how you handle governance and external relationships, but the underlying skill set—collaboration, strategic alignment, and adaptability—remains consistent.
The Sprint Beats the Stack
Q: How is AI being used to drive inclusivity without sacrificing the human touch?
Pam highlights language translation tools and localized experiences in branches as ways AI can empower members and staff while maintaining personal guidance from staff.
