Was once a big fan, but it’s now losing steam. The host seems to love to hear himself speak.

  • Tim, trim the fat!!

Great concept poisoned by a seemingly narcissistic host, taking the longest path to a question for the mere satisfaction of hearing his own voice. Tim’s surreal roundabout way of speaking is almost impressively infuriating.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

447: The US Men's National Team's Rise to Soccer Relevance - With Leander Schaerlaeckens
Q: How do you frame the US National Team's history without bias from a European perspective?
By acknowledging the sport's European lineage while emphasizing unique American dynamics, business, and culture that shaped the team, and by treating each chapter as its own dramatic arc rather than a linear storyline.
448: "A Life's Calling" - With Horse Racing Track Announcer Tom Durkin
Q: What did you do to develop your voice and craft beyond just calling races?
Durkin describes studying a 1,700-entry vocabulary notebook, refining language to create vivid, dramatic calls; he emphasized getting reps, critiquing performances, and continually pushing the boundaries of race commentary.
448: "A Life's Calling" - With Horse Racing Track Announcer Tom Durkin
Q: You're a Chicago guy by birth and upbringing. How does a kid from Chicago wind up at the pinnacle of horse racing?
Tom explains a formative love of racing sparked by Arlington Park and a lifelong fascination with Phil George F.; a blend of talent, opportunity, and a willingness to take chances led him from county fairs to major tracks like Hialeah and the Meadowlands, eventually landing the NBC Breeders' Cup role.
444: Baseball's Pioneering Nashua Dodgers - With Bill Ranauro
Q: Tell us about the journey about getting into this story.
Bill Renauro explains how his Red Sox and New Hampshire roots, plus a widening interest in neglected civil rights chapters of baseball, led him to study the Nashua Dodgers. He details discovering sources, neighboring Nashua and Montreal ties, and how the local history shifted from obscurity to a book project over years of research.
445: "Dos a Cero" & The US/Mexico Soccer "Sibling Rivalry" - With Hal Phillips
Q: As you dove into the narrative arc of this rivalry, what were some pivotal points you would consider essential in that history?
Phillips notes Graham Zusi's 2013 Panama City goal as a catalyst that linked a late-qualifying US side to intercontinental playoff potential, while highlighting the Dos Acero era as a strategic evolution where the US began using smaller venues (like Columbus) to engineer home-field advantage against Mexico, reshaping the rivalry's geography and economics.
