Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#129: Gill1918 presents Dwight Phillips "Long Jump Part 2" from Tampa Bay/USF Clinic
Q: How long was this approach?
The long jump approach discussed was around 23 strides, roughly 172 feet in this context, with a focus on consistency and not over-relying on the board.
#126: Gill1918 presents Vince Anderson "400m Training Part 2" from Tampa Bay/USF Clinic
Q: Okay, that's a good question. The 400 and 400 hurdles are exactly the same; how do you manage newer hurdlers who aren't as experienced with your form?
The approach is consistent: coach them to run functionally at around 47.6% of their 200m pace for shorter intervals and adjust based on rate and rhythm; hurdle-specific work is layered after solid sprint groundwork is established, ensuring they progress from flat speed to hurdle rhythm with a clear standard (e.g., starting at around 60 flat and scaling up as form and speed improve).
#122: Gill1918 presents Erik Jenkins "Coaching the Relays Part 2" from Tampa Bay/USF Clinic
Q: How often do you run relays in practice and why?
I try to run relays as often as possible, ideally every weekend, to see performance patterns, validate marks, and ensure athletes understand different execution scenarios.
#122: Gill1918 presents Erik Jenkins "Coaching the Relays Part 2" from Tampa Bay/USF Clinic
Q: What role does weather play in relay setup and marking?
Weather determines mark placement and can change how you run the exchanges; you may adjust marks or even run without tape in heavy rain, relying on practice and repetition to stay reliable.
#122: Gill1918 presents Erik Jenkins "Coaching the Relays Part 2" from Tampa Bay/USF Clinic
Q: How do you manage noise and focus during live exchanges?
I minimize noise by clear, concise cues and a controlled environment during the live exchanges, using a simple verbal cue followed by a defined action so athletes know exactly when to respond.
