  • Great conversations!

I’m new to the S&C world and I’ve learned a ton from going back through many of Joel’s podcasts, and of course all the new ones as well. I’ve most appreciated the pods more focused toward speed development, but also really enjoyed the range of conversations and topics that always open new doors for me.

Joel’s sense of curiosity and the willing exploration of ideas with each guest make this a great listen each week.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

507: Richard Burnett on Reactive Strength and Explosive Isometrics in Combine Prep
Q: How are ISOs used to complement needs in combine groups and assessments?
Two ISO fits are used to train and assess overcoming and yielding movements; belt-squat ISO work is emphasized for single-leg reactivity, with practical setups like zircher variations, Prowler-type drills, and dynamometer-based feedback to ensure high-quality, safe loading and measurable progress.
507: Richard Burnett on Reactive Strength and Explosive Isometrics in Combine Prep
Q: Could you define the single leg RSI or RSI test, and then talk about the single leg variation of that as well?
Reactive Strength Index is jump height divided by contact time, popularized by Eamon Flanagan; some practitioners prefer flight time divided by contact time, but the core idea is measuring how quickly a jump is produced after ground contact, with single-leg RSI focusing on one leg to reveal asymmetries and leg-specific reactivity.
501: Athlete Archetypes and Isometric Standards with Tanner Care
Q: What are the big buckets you look at for an athlete's movement signature?
I have a layered approach, focusing first on health, then capacity, and finally on specific adaptations based on their sport.
495: Kevin Secours on Rituals of Strength and Movement
Q: Can you expand on how you manage discomfort and challenge within training?
I advocate for microdoses of discomfort, emphasizing the psychological growth that comes from navigating through pain and resilience.
495: Kevin Secours on Rituals of Strength and Movement
Q: Tell me about how you study an athlete or a student in terms of their body tension and their expression, and how you work with that.
I look for chronic tension reasons, whether it's from trauma or fear of life, and aim for a welcoming environment, focusing on self-ownership and exploration in movement.
