  • Great conversations!

I’m new to the S&C world and I’ve learned a ton from going back through many of Joel’s podcasts, and of course all the new ones as well. I’ve most appreciated the pods more focused toward speed development, but also really enjoyed the range of conversations and topics that always open new doors for me.

Joel’s sense of curiosity and the willing exploration of ideas with each guest make this a great listen each week.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

512: Håkan Andersson on Acceleration, Elasticity, and the Future of Sprint Training
Q: What is your view on using mechanized devices versus traditional methods like hills and sleds?
All tools have value; hills and sleds can still be effective but mechanized devices offer precise control over resistance and velocity, enabling a broader, safer exploration of the acceleration curve. The best approach combines multiple methods while prioritizing mechanics, feedback, and individualized programming.
512: Håkan Andersson on Acceleration, Elasticity, and the Future of Sprint Training
Q: How should beginners approach resisted and assisted sprints to build skills safely?
Start with assisted accelerations to build translation of velocity without excessive loading, then progressively introduce moderate resistance, ensuring you monitor step length, frequency, and contact times with real-time feedback to maintain proper mechanics before pushing toward higher velocities.
512: Håkan Andersson on Acceleration, Elasticity, and the Future of Sprint Training
Q: What are the practical guidelines for setting resistance in sprinting machines for different athlete levels?
Use a sweet spot around 15-25% of body mass for resistance, and about 15-30% velocity decrement, adjusting for surface friction; very heavy loads (>50% velocity loss) tend to act more like strength work and can harm sprint mechanics, while too light loads may fail to provide meaningful stimulus. Always couple with free sprinting to preserve mechanics and use immediate biomechanical feedback to fine-tune the protocol.
511: Mike Guadango on First Principles of Building the Total Athlete
Q: Within strength and conditioning, what are some debates that you see aren't moving the needle?
There are ongoing debates like Olympic lifting's role and fascia training; the point is to keep challenging ideas, acknowledge different coaching lineages, and focus on why we do what we do, rather than blindly following a doctrine.
510: Daniel Coyle on The Hidden Force Behind Great Athletes
Q: How do you describe the shift from focusing on individuals to exploring group dynamics and culture?
The individual work revealed patterns, but it was the examination of group culture—the conversations, rituals, and shared energy—that unlocked deeper understanding of how people grow together.
