  • Great conversations!

I’m new to the S&C world and I’ve learned a ton from going back through many of Joel’s podcasts, and of course all the new ones as well. I’ve most appreciated the pods more focused toward speed development, but also really enjoyed the range of conversations and topics that always open new doors for me.

Joel’s sense of curiosity and the willing exploration of ideas with each guest make this a great listen each week.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

520: Julien Pineau on The Nervous System and the Art of Adaptation
Q: How does the phylogenetic wheel influence training decisions in a typical session?
It frames how you move from flow to defense modes during a workout and how you can steer back toward productive exertion by understanding where the athlete sits on the nervous system spectrum and using strategies to restore balance.
517: Chris Korfist on Sprint Specific Strength and Key Drivers of Speed Performance
Q: What ingredients make a sprint workout truly powerful for a team?
Clarify the why to your athletes, use numbers and film to show what needs work, ensure intrinsic motivation to give 100%, and stay flexible to adjust based on athlete feedback and real-time data.
517: Chris Korfist on Sprint Specific Strength and Key Drivers of Speed Performance
Q: Is there any hip flexor strength norm or standard sprinters should shore up?
Strong hip flexors matter, but more importantly it's about how the leg comes through from mid-stance and into the ground; hip flexor strength should support rapid leg turnover in mid- to late swing, and be coordinated with the obliques and pelvic control.
516: Gary Gray on Rhythm, Rotation, and The Art of Athletic Movement
Q: How did you come to develop the applied functional science approach?
Gary explains that his journey through physical therapy, athletic training, and strength coaching led him to realize that most traditional approaches treated symptoms rather than movement fundamentals. He shifted to an evidence-based framework that emphasizes the science of movement, six primary planes, and the idea that training should be three-dimensional and functionally relevant to the athlete's sport.
512: Håkan Andersson on Acceleration, Elasticity, and the Future of Sprint Training
Q: What is your view on using mechanized devices versus traditional methods like hills and sleds?
All tools have value; hills and sleds can still be effective but mechanized devices offer precise control over resistance and velocity, enabling a broader, safer exploration of the acceleration curve. The best approach combines multiple methods while prioritizing mechanics, feedback, and individualized programming.
