  • Miss the weekly reviews!

Megan is a fantastic host, but I really miss the old format! At the end of the interview, Kirkus editors would spotlight new releases across reading levels and genres, and now it’s just the interview. I’m tuning out more and don’t feel that enthused listening to someone I’ve likely never heard of talking about a book I will never read.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep 488: Chris Bohjalian
Q: I got to ask you about a word in this book. This is following my own interest. The word pisky first appears on page 40 of this novel. What does it signify?
Chris explains that pisky is discussed within the context of Episcopalian culture and serves as a linguistic detail that equips Mira's voice with a distinctive, era-appropriate vocabulary, illustrating how language colorizes character and setting.
Ep 484: Jessica Knoll
Q: What was your writing process like for this book compared to earlier works?
I found the process more taxing and learned to pace myself, allowing breaks between projects and focusing on intentional work rhythms to protect the creative spark.
Ep 484: Jessica Knoll
Q: For listeners who haven't yet read it, what should they know about the book up front?
It's an erotic thriller that preserves strong thriller elements and twists, while inviting readers into a deeper exploration of desire, consent, and power dynamics.
Ep 483: Jenny Jackson
Q: Where does this title come from, The Shampoo Effect?
It's a hangover term that captures that morning-after feeling when a drink helps you reset and feel buoyant, which mirrors the book's exploration of rejuvenation and the messy, funny side of midlife friendships.
Ep 486: Colson Whitehead
Q: What were you trying to figure out in Cool Machine as you were writing it?
I was exploring where Ray Carney would go next after the previous novels, aligning his personal and professional trajectory with the city's changing landscape, and using that to probe larger questions about success, morality, and self-definition.
