  • Loving this podcast

As an avid reader, it’s wonderful to be able to listen to these episodes and hear both the authors insights and the carefully crafted questions and commentary. I appreciate that the books are current which adds to my reading experience.

  • Great guests, but host wants spotlight

Really enjoy this podcast except when host, Miwa Messer, is the interviewer. She constantly interrupts the authors and seems to be always struggling to say what she thinks is the most profound statement of all time.

Sadly, the George Saunders episode was one where she must have told us (annoyingly) that she’s been a “bookseller forever” a bazillion times, and she interjected herself needlessly throughout.

Worse still, she completely tramples over Heather Ann Thompson with long pauses and un... more

  • Get a new host

Why would Miwa Messner invite the NYTBR people on just to talk about herself the whole time? Why have a host who grinds every conversation to a halt? And she constantly interrupts herself as if everyone already knows what she’s talking about, but we don’t because she makes no sense.

  • Stop talking

I would love to hear the authors being interviewed but the host interrupts and talks too much. This show is not about you! Stop talking about yourself and let the authors speak.

  • The book itself

I love the way this book feels in my hands. The pages turn smoothly and for a big read, this is an important feature! Perhaps it is strange thing to note. Just loving Loneliness

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Yann Martel on SON OF NOBODY
Q: Tell me about how this novel revealed itself to you; how did you approach its form and craft?
Martel describes how his ideas arise from reading and how he adapted to tell the story through a mix of epic fragments and footnotes, drawing from the Iliad and Homeric tradition to shape both verse fragments and explanatory notes.
Amal El-Mohtar on SEASONS OF GLASS AND IRON
Q: What surprised you about yourself when revisiting this 15-year span of work, and how has your perspective changed?
She notes a surprising consistency of affect and a continued affection for her own work, along with a realization that rereading old stories can reveal new relevance and emotional resonance with contemporary readers.
Amal El-Mohtar on SEASONS OF GLASS AND IRON
Q: First, what does your writing process look like for those different things, and how do you keep yourself organized?
Amal explains that organization isn't her strong suit, and she often relies on prose texture to carry her through uncertain plot or character points, using imagery and rhythm to inhabit the story until clarity emerges.
Jeanette Winterson on ONE ALADDIN TWO LAMPS
Q: How did you start writing this book? Did you do research or compile things, and do you write linearly when assembling something that encompasses multiple ideas?
Winterson explains she never writes linearly, follows the energy of the idea, and often shifts focus to keep momentum rather than following a fixed beginning, middle, and end.
Kevin Fedarko on A WALK IN THE PARK
Q: Tell us a little bit about the origins of the story and your inspiration and how it evolved from there.
The project began as a National Geographic magazine piece to commemorate the National Park Service centennial, and over time the journey morphed into a deeper, two-book exploration of the Grand Canyon through river travel and then on foot, uncovering layers of history, culture, and environment that reshaped the author's original plan.
