  • Fantastic, love listening to Miwa

Thorough and engaging interviews that broaden one’s understanding of the context and meaning of a work. Reminds us that art doesn’t happen in a vacuum; all the content we love, that moves and changes us, is carefully nurtured and shepherded by people who got there before us and are welcoming us in. Grateful for this sophisticated podcast and for Miwa’s velvety voice. Also, hearing Annie Leibovitz call someone a legend is all the recommendation I’ll ever need.

  • Great guests, but host wants spotlight

Really enjoy this podcast except when host, Miwa Messer, is the interviewer. She constantly interrupts the authors and seems to be always struggling to say what she thinks is the most profound statement of all time.

Sadly, the George Saunders episode was one where she must have told us (annoyingly) that she’s been a “bookseller forever” a bazillion times, and she interjected herself needlessly throughout.

Worse still, she completely tramples over Heather Ann Thompson with long pauses and un... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Emma Straub on AMERICAN FANTASY
Q: Can you give us a synopsis of American Fantasy?
The novel follows a 50-year-old woman named Annie who, after a divorce and becoming an empty nester, ends up on a cruise with 3,000 fans and a beloved boy band, where she confronts desires, memory, and the textures of midlife longing.
Xochitl Gonzalez on LAST NIGHT IN BROOKLYN
Q: I'd love if you can talk to me a bit about what your character, your creative character process looks like, because Alicia was such a great character, La Garza was such a great character.
Gonzalez explains that Alicia, Olga, and Raquel came to life from backstories and voices that felt authentic to her own generation, with the insistence that women of color in these worlds deserve complex, ambitious arcs. She emphasizes blending personal experience with literary influences to shape characters who navigate class and culture without losing their voice.
Maria Semple on GO GENTLE
Q: What was it like to meet Oprah after Bernadette was selected for her book club?
Semple describes it as surreal and inspiring, with Oprah's genuine presence and support reaffirming Semple's commitment to craft and courage in public life.
Maria Semple on GO GENTLE
Q: Do you know where you're going when you sit down to write?
Yes, for Go Gentle there was a clear mystery plot, and Semple knew the path to making Adora whole, though the romance angle emerged later as the story evolved.
Patrick Radden Keefe on LONDON FALLING
Q: What unanswered question has bothered you the most in your reporting?
Keefe explains that he obsesses over people or meetings he cannot fully verify, and that often the hardest part is realizing some threads do not fit the piece he is building, leading to tough editorial decisions about what to include.
