As an avid reader, it’s wonderful to be able to listen to these episodes and hear both the authors insights and the carefully crafted questions and commentary. I appreciate that the books are current which adds to my reading experience.

  • Great guests, but host wants spotlight

Really enjoy this podcast except when host, Miwa Messer, is the interviewer. She constantly interrupts the authors and seems to be always struggling to say what she thinks is the most profound statement of all time.

Sadly, the George Saunders episode was one where she must have told us (annoyingly) that she’s been a “bookseller forever” a bazillion times, and she interjected herself needlessly throughout.

Worse still, she completely tramples over Heather Ann Thompson with long pauses and un... more

  • Get a new host

Why would Miwa Messner invite the NYTBR people on just to talk about herself the whole time? Why have a host who grinds every conversation to a halt? And she constantly interrupts herself as if everyone already knows what she’s talking about, but we don’t because she makes no sense.

  • Stop talking

I would love to hear the authors being interviewed but the host interrupts and talks too much. This show is not about you! Stop talking about yourself and let the authors speak.

  • The book itself

I love the way this book feels in my hands. The pages turn smoothly and for a big read, this is an important feature! Perhaps it is strange thing to note. Just loving Loneliness

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Markus Zusak on THE BOOK THIEF
Q: How did Liesl come to be the central protagonist, and what was the approach to developing her arc?
He describes starting from a gut instinct to make the protagonist a girl, drawing from family stories, and then letting Liesl's experiences and growth drive the plot, with death as a constant, shaping and reframing events as the story unfolds.
Ron Currie on THE SAVAGE, NOBLE DEATH OF BABS DIONNE
Q: What was the writing approach to the opening line and the prologue's framing of time and memory?
The author describes using a prologue to dramatize how small and large events create a timeline that leads to the present, and how memory and place intersect to form the character's worldview, especially in relation to generational trauma and empathy across time.
Ron Currie on THE SAVAGE, NOBLE DEATH OF BABS DIONNE
Q: How did the writing unfold once you met Babs and understood who she is?
Currie explains that character drives the story; once Babs appeared, the plot and thematic questions fell into place, with careful attention to the set-up, emotional stakes, and the ways flaws and strengths propel both personal and communal drama.
Jo Nesbø on WOLF HOUR
Q: Is the gun problem in America more obvious and pronounced to you as an outsider?
Nesbø acknowledges that while the gun issue is problematic in America, it is often perceived as strange by Europeans due to differing cultural contexts.
Jo Nesbø on WOLF HOUR
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about what the key crime in the story is and what Bob and his colleagues are facing?
The story begins with a shooting in a project, identifying the shooter early on, and follows Bob as he investigates further, leading to deeper themes of violence and society.
