In it, distinguished football journalist Patrick Barclay joined with Colin Shindler, author of the best selling Manchester United Ruined My Life, and the Super Agent Jon Holmes (think Gary Lineker, Peter Shilton, Tony Woodcock etc.) to talk about football as it used to be in the days befor... more

  • ‘La Pelota no se Mancha’

In response to the episode on the pathetic spectacle that was the World Cup draw. The phrase in the title means, ‘The ball doesn’t stain’. All of the money grubbing, exploitive, socially destructive, garbage that orbits football doesn’t alter the essence of the game. The game itself is, still, beautiful. It’s the sport that affords its players, many, many of whom come from relatively impoverished backgrounds, the ability to express themselves. That is what we love.

  • An erudite, nostalgic listen.

    Gentlemen,

As a football fan in my 30s, I suppose the current landscape of TV, podcast, and radio coverage is largely tailored to my generation and younger audiences. Yet, on the whole, I find much of it lacking. There’s a real dearth of experienced, articulate analysis, with broadcasters seemingly prioritising youthful appeal over quality insight. Ironically, I think many younger fans would actually prefer a higher standard of discussion.

This week, I stumbled upon your podcast, and I have to... more

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

138. The One With Tony Woodcock
Q: Can you actually coach a goal scorer to score goals?
Woodcock suggests that while you can coach a striker to hold the ball up, link play, and read situations, scoring instinct and the ability to anticipate where the ball will be are still crucial, though modern teams can influence service and system.
126. The North-South Divide
Q: Is it possible with the right investment to take any club anywhere in the country?
It depends on the quality of the ownership and the investment possibilities, with many clubs struggling to attract the right investors.
126. The North-South Divide
Q: Is the game benefiting from the North-South divide?
The increasing concentration of wealth in the southern half of the country is adversely affecting football, particularly for clubs in the North.
123. Are Modern Refs Too Fussy?
Q: What are your thoughts on modern refereeing techniques?
Modern referees seem to have become more of a focal point during matches, often disrupting the flow of the game with constant whistles for fouls and VAR interruptions.
118. The One with Steve Coppell
Q: How did you come to terms emotionally with not being able to physically control a game as a manager?
Coppell admits that adapting to the managerial role was challenging, feeling the pain of not being able to directly influence the game's outcome as a manager.
