I am a huge fan of Stat News. This episode is not your best work. The field has moved away from terms like misuse and abuse AND you should explain the difference between dependence and addiction and clarify which you are referring to here. Addiction is the severest form of a substance use disorder - it’s a clinical condition w diagnostic criteria.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

From Say More: “The C-Word: Stories of Cancer”
Q: So how do you think having cancer changed you as a person?
I wish I could say it's made me Mother Teresa. As the years go by, when I'm having a bad day or if I'm fighting with my kids, I do think, hey, I'm just really glad I'm still here.
128: A libertarian vision for U.S. health care
Q: What percentage of chance would you give that America embraces your proposed system?
The odds of Congress adopting this system are very low, but over time, people's shift to retail purchasing will occur from the bottom up.
128: A libertarian vision for U.S. health care
Q: What would the system look like for me if we instituted your market-based system?
Instead of pulling out your insurance card when visiting the doctor, you would pay in cash and know the total cost of the visit.
128: A libertarian vision for U.S. health care
Q: So how does your perspective differ from what you and some co-authors recently called in another stat essay, the health care policy cult?
There are a lot of people on both sides of the political spectrum who agree that the health care system is very badly broken, but very few who believe in tearing it down and replacing it with market-based arrangements.
129: How photography helped heal a couple in the aftermath of cancer
Q: How did revisiting the photos impact your emotional process?
Revisiting the photos was painful but necessary to confront the shared struggles and growth during Anna's illness.
