This is soo good. So bad but so dang good!
I loved The Retrievals and so much other Serial reporting. But The Preventionist seems like lazy journalism. It misrepresents what medical child abuse is. No where does Neary even acknowledge that she’s telling only the parents’ version of the story. Unless the parents sign a HIPAA release, theirs is the only side that gets publicly shared. You have to at least own up to the gaps in your investigation.
So much is missing in “The Preventionist” season of Serial, apart from investigative journalism generally, but a single expert on Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another/Munchausen by Proxy medical child abuse being interviewed on the record would alone have been a massive corrective to the omissions in this opinion piece, which gives so much air time to people who have fairly convincingly been abusing their children.
Do not listen to this show without doing your own research/ fact checking. The reporting is biased and poorly evidenced. Parents’ perspectives are prioritised over those of vulnerable children. Experienced and highly skilled professionals, from many fields, but most significantly child protection medicine, are presented as having both agenda and incentive, again without evidence.
This is highly concerning and sets a dangerous precedent.
the most recent season is completely slanted "reporting", what a horrible decline in quality from the first season. they did not talk to experts instead its just a hit piece to try to promote "parents rights" while doing only the bare minimum of investigating
