What is a ghost? A tragedy condemned to repeat itself time and again? An instant of pain, perhaps? Something dead which still seems to be alive? An emotion suspended in time? Like a blurred photograph? Like an insect trapped in amber?
When we talk about "genre" as it relates to movies, books, comics, etc. what do we mean? What IS "genre?" Josh and Ira break down how we use that term on Film School.
Also, Josh recommends MasterChef (Hulu), and Ira recommends Sunderland Till I Die... more
"The earth knows it's wrong for us to survive..."
We're diving into Miyazaki's second feature film! The world is a wasteland called the "sea of despair." But one intrepid young heroine might have the keys to save us all.
Josh and Ira take a trip outdoors to visit the Criterion Closet when it visited Los Angeles. It was a hoot!
Hayao Miyazaki's first film!
Josh announces our next project on Film School: we're diving deep into the Japanese anime master, Hayao Miyazaki!
I went to film school and graduated right before the pandemic, meaning all my film contacts took their separate ways while we were living in the shutdown. Four years later, I’ve been dying to have film theory conversations with others who study the craft, and this is pretty much it. Granted, I’m not talking with them, but it feels like I am with how conversational the hosts are, AND most of my thoughts parallel theirs.
Such a great podcast that I’ll be recommending to all my fellow film buffs.
Been listening for a while (went back during quarantine from episode 1) and enjoy it tons, especially the Cutting Room Floor stuff)
I wish there was a good film history or critic podcast out there where the commentators actually knew the films, had watched the films and studied the films instead of just giving their simplistic opinions. This podcast is stupid and insulting.

The best part of listening to Ira and Josh is getting a glimpse of their friendship. Even during their serious conversations about films and life, listening to Film School is like hanging out with that good friend who always makes you laugh.
I follow a couple dozen podcasts, most of which are about writing. Because time and life are short, I typically listen at about 40% accelerated playback. If podcasters don't get to the point, I get frustrated. Quickly. When I listened to the Blade Runner episode of Film School, it took Josh and Ira 15 minutes to finally get to the meat of the show. On pretty much any other podcast, I would have bailed at the 10-minute mark. But these two...

There’s just something great about hearing two film geeks break down the best flicks of all times. This ones in the regular rotation. Easy and fun.
Josh and Ira provide listeners with an entertaining and insightful podcast, not just on films but also on life. They're fun to listen to and I enjoy learning about the different films they review.
First off, hosts Josh and Ira are great. Chemistry is fantastic, humor is spot on and knowledge gets dropped left and right like too much laundry coming out of the dryer. If you like movies and story telling, or you just need motivation to work on that project you say you want to do, this podcast is for you. Highest possible rating. Also if you like Ira and Josh and want to hear more from them, check out the podcast Two Guys One Trek. So good.
Started listening to these yesterday and have enjoyed what I have heard so far. Keep up the great work guys
I got turned on to this podcast by a friend. Great commentary on classic films, amusing, refreshing and thoughtful anecdotes on life! Can’t wait for new episodes 👍👍
I thought the only way to a grounded film education was to find a way to get my parents to Penny up 25 grand a year so that I could party with the stars of tomorrow, while dodging rich predators and power-brokers. Imagine my surprise and delight when I discovered the film school podcast! Ira and Joshua absolutely crush it.
I know Josh and Ira from their other podcast TWO GUYS 1 TREK and was so happy to have stumbled across them going through the AFI top 100 movie list. They really fun to listen to and truly love talking about story and what makes a good movie. Bonus, thanks to FILM SCHOOL, I probably look like a crazy person cracking up listening to them my walks with my dogs.
Awesome podcast that’s really entertaining, informative, and brings you into the creative process. I’m definitely enjoying these and hope to hear more from their perspectives in film. They give you a lot to think about and have inspired some creative thoughts of my own. Highly recommend giving this a listen!
