  • Love this podcast

I’m binging all the episodes starting from season 1 and just love these conversations with these legends of cinema. Currently listening to the Superman episode with the late Dick Donner (RIP). Just want to add that it was David Prowse (who played Darth Vader along with the weightlifting manservant in A Clockwork Orange) that trained Christopher Reeve, not Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca).

  • New fan!

Thank you so much for interviewing Eric Roberts. He is one of those actors you see everywhere and he’s fantastic. I saw star 80 when it came out. I was about 13 and boy did it have an impact on me. How he never got an Oscar for that was beyond me, but I think back then they didn’t like “bad guys”. I love your interviewing style and the guests, etc. Please keep it up!

  • Good interviews

I’ve been “following” this podcast for years and never really prioritized it, thereby not listening too often. Imagine my surprise in enjoying the Linda Woolverton interview so much that I’ve made “It Happened in Hollywood” podcast one of my favorites. (I didn’t know of Linda Woolverton before this episode.)

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Amy Heckerling: ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High’
Q: What attracted you to the shopping-mall setting and interwoven stories, and how did you decide on the ensemble cast that became so iconic?
She explains that the mall setting offered a contained, social stage where multiple teen stories could intersect realistically. The ensemble was chosen to reflect varied teen experiences, and Sean Penn's embodiment of Jeff Spicoli stood out early, with other cast choices growing from there as the project evolved.
Amy Heckerling: ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High’
Q: Let's start with The Beginnings, because I know this was your first feature film. Tell me about how you learned to make movies, and this happened with a chance meeting with Cameron Crowe who wrote the book that it was based on.
Amy describes her film education through NYU and AFI, the early independent work with minimal resources, and how she connected with Cameron Crowe, whose book inspired the project. She emphasizes practical learning from being on the streets with cameras and in small production environments, which informed her approach to Fast Times.
Eric Roberts: ‘Star 80’
Q: How did filming on actual locations affect the movie's tone and authenticity?
Filming at real sites like the Playboy Mansion and the murder house grounded the story in reality, amplifying the drama and helping Roberts channel the truth of the events rather than a staged recreation.
Eric Roberts: ‘Star 80’
Q: What drew Bob Fosse to this material, and how did that influence your involvement?
Fosse spent months researching with Roberts, developing a deep understanding that shaped their collaboration; the process was rigorous, with Fosse guiding Roberts to inhabit the character's psychology fully, not just his words.
Henry Thomas: ’E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’
Q: How did interactions with the ET creature and the on-set process influence your performance?
He describes working with the puppet being controlled by a team, using Caprice Roth's mime work to connect emotionally with ET, and how the director's real-time guidance shaped his delivery and emotional state on camera.
