Sci-fi and Animation sound in TEEN TITANS GO!, JURASSIC WORLD and more with Grace Stensland
Q: How did you first get into sound design and audio post-production?
Grace describes starting in college, focusing on audio engineering within film and media production, and being connected to mentors who steered her toward professional sound work, leading to her current role at Sound Rebels.
Bonus #5 The incredible process of recording LORD OF THE FLIES, MONKEY MAN and more with Ande Schurr
Q: What was the first sound you ever recorded, and why did it hook you into this career?
At film school, a brook behind the campus captured through headphones revealed how microphone placement changes perception, which hooked me on sound as a path, long before working on major productions.
Bonus #5 The incredible process of recording LORD OF THE FLIES, MONKEY MAN and more with Ande Schurr
Q: How did you decide where to record ambiances overnight and how did you balance time, location, and diversity of sound worlds?
Decision-making focused on capturing diverse sound worlds on each island—deep forests, waves, land-water interfaces, and insect/bird textures—while coordinating with art and production to avoid noisy or restricted sites and maximize useful ambience for post-production.
Bonus #5 The incredible process of recording LORD OF THE FLIES, MONKEY MAN and more with Ande Schurr
Q: What challenges generally did those conditions bring you, and a little overview before we dive into specifics?
Rain, wind, and unpredictable weather dictated mic placement and protection strategies, requiring constant adaptation and collaboration with other departments to keep dialogue clear and ambient sounds authentic.
Bringing animation to life on ADVENTURE TIME, ADULT SWIMS THE ELEPHANT through Sound Editing with Scott Manke
Q: What is your favorite kind of wacky sounds that work perfectly in animation but don't in live action?
I like kind of synthy type sounds that were made of a synthesizer, they can really punch up the animation's sound effects.
