  • good in theory!

great concept! i love the intention of this podcast and have learned a lot but the older episodes are SO hard to listen to. the host talks over and constantly interrupts the women he has on, asking questions and then practically answering for them. meanwhile he lets the men ramble themselves to oblivion. could be much more respectful. i have yet to listen to newer material so (hopefully) this may have changed

  • Not all podcasts have migrated

All episodes from Sound Works Collection were going to be migrated however the current list is spotty. I’m waiting for my favorite episode from 2/2017 to be copied over.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

291 - The Sound of Tuner, with Leo Woodall and Johnnie Burn
Q: What was your process for figuring out what Niki's hyperacusis was going to sound like, and how did you execute it?
We approached it by mapping three levels of hearing for Niki and building the soundscape to reflect his subjective experience, starting with research, then experimenting with prototypes in the mix, and finally integrating it so the audience feels like they're inside his head without becoming overwhelming.
290 - Mariah Carey Live in Dolby Atmos, with Mix Engineer Paul Falcone
Q: So, at what point did you think about moving from studio engineering into live mixing? How did that transition happen?
The transition happened as Missy Elliott's projects grew into live shows; I started by supporting studio work and then gradually took on playback and front-of-house roles as the shows required timecode-driven visuals and larger-scale performances, eventually moving into the live Atmos space with direct front-of-house work for larger events.
288 - Mixing Maroon 5 Live in Dolby Atmos, with Vince Casamatta
Q: How did your approach evolve from conventional stereo to immersive Atmos for Maroon 5?
We focused on building complete, autonomous mix blocks that could be placed in space, preserving the core arrangement and vocal integrity while adding spatial movement and reverberation to enhance emotion without overwhelming the mix.
287 - The Sound of Lee Cronin’s The Mummy
Q: What was the big challenge in mixing the film for audiences in test screenings?
The team highlights the ongoing balance between story, emotion, and sound, noting that test screenings often reveal where the mix needs refinement, with emphasis on clarity of dialogue and the impact of sound on pacing and scares.
286 - Mixing Carlos Santana Live in Dolby Atmos, with Kevin Madigan
Q: How did you determine the creative choices for placing elements in Atmos?
The approach focused on keeping the song intact, avoiding distraction, and using immersive space to enhance the core rhythm and vocal elements, with selective, tasteful motion for solos and percussion to engage the audience without gimmicks.
