  • Useful and Personable

I love this podcast and the energy from Quint, Allie, and Logan. Not only do they discuss relevant and useful financial information, their stories help you relate to them as a real person. Quint’s relationship with Allie reminds me of mine and one of my employees. The beginning episodes helped me build financial literacy. The later episodes dive into specific topics depending on the questions they receive. Every year they also review the basics again, which I love. Because of the podcast I have ... more

  • Meh

The chatter is annoying. It almost feels like bro culture and I’m not here for it. I don’t care about marathons or that you gave up caffeine. Content is good, but leaving cause the chatter is annoying as humanely possible.

  • Get to the point

I found this podcast, not as informative as it could have been. It seemed like the hosts were more interested in having a conversation and carrying on versus discussing the topic at hand. The first settlements of podcast I didn’t get on topic. I had to turn off halfway through. If you want to hear banter and not learn, this is likely podcast for you.

Fidelity Zero Funds
Q: What should a buy-and-hold investor consider when comparing Fidelity's zero-fee fund to an ETF like VTI that pays quarterly dividends and has a small expense ratio?
The hosts suggest evaluating whether the funds are truly apples-to-apples: both are tracking the same total stock market, so the primary differences are cost, dividend handling, and where the assets are held. They point out that the annualized dividend yield is roughly similar between the Fidelity zero fund and VTI, around 1%, so the difference in payout frequency is less impactful for long-term reinvestment. They also remind listeners to consider tax implications and the practical limitation of holding Fidelity-only zero funds within Fidelity's platform when planning a broader investment strategy.
Fidelity Zero Funds
Q: Hey, DIY Money. This is Nick from St. Louis, Missouri. My question today is about Fidelity Zero Funds. These are funds that have a zero dollar expense ratio. I've learned recently they only pay out dividends one time per year versus a lot of traditional funds pay out dividends quarterly. I'm interested to know your thoughts on how to evaluate if a zero fund is a better choice than an equivalent fund with a low expense ratio that pays out dividends quarterly. For example, how would you evaluate which fund is a better option for a buy and hold investor with a long time horizon who reinvest dividends? A Fidelity Total Stock Market Zero Fee Fund that pays out dividends annually or an equivalent total stock market fund such as VTI with an expense ratio of 0.03% that pays out dividends quarterly.
The hosts explain that Fidelity Zero Funds don't charge an explicit expense ratio and are index funds designed to mirror a broad market index; the key is to compare apples to apples by looking at total costs, including potential tax implications and dividend handling. They note that dividend payouts, whether annual or quarterly, tend to be small and can be reinvested, so the long-term impact is minimal. They emphasize that the main cost to watch is the expense ratio and tax considerations, and that holding at Fidelity can constrain transfers to other brokers, which could have tax consequences if you later move the investment.
Should I Do Backdoor Roth Contributions
Q: Should Morris open a new traditional IRA and convert gradually or contribute to Roth directly this year and convert later?
The hosts explain that if Morris uses a traditional IRA for non-deductible contributions and then converts, the growth will be taxed, and if there are other traditional IRA funds, the pro rata rule can complicate the tax outcome; they suggest a clear plan, possibly using a separate account for non-deductible contributions, and considering Roth 401(k) as an alternative while maintaining awareness of tax implications.
Calculating Net Worth
Q: What say you, how would you handle vehicles and electronics in a net worth calculation?
The hosts agree to exclude vehicles and electronics from net worth as ongoing investments, treating them as monthly expenses or depreciating items, and instead focus on liquid and investable assets plus liabilities; they stress consistency and alignment with personal goals.
Market Meltdown
Q: And what are you telling these people when you communicate with them, Allie?
Focus on long-term plans, reassure clients by grounding conversations in the forward-looking plan rather than current swings, and help clients frame declines in percentage terms to avoid panic.
