  • Elevating the Trades—One Episode at a Time

This podcast has been awesome to listen to! As a septic and drainage business owner, I’ve found Luke does a great job covering topics and bringing on guests that are incredibly relatable and helpful. I make it a point to tune in whenever a new episode drops. I’ve also recently started joining some of the Dirtbag University sessions, which have been a huge asset for business owners and leaders like myself. Keep it coming, Luke—really appreciate what you’re doing for our industry!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#122: Failing Forward - Kristina McMillan
Q: What are the key hires that matter for growing and scaling a construction business?
She emphasizes separating operational work from strategic people management, hiring for office administration and HR/finance to reduce firefighting in the field, and implementing SOPs and checklists to build trust and scalable processes.
#121: Profit First for Contractors - Shawn Van Dyke
Q: Talk to me about the difference between markup and margin and why it's important for contractors.
Shawn explains that markup is the amount added to cost to reach price, while margin is the profit left after cost relative to the selling price. He demonstrates that a 20% markup on a $100 cost yields a $120 price and a 16.7% margin, highlighting common misinterpretations and advising to think in terms of margin when setting prices.
#119: Building the Next Generation in the Trades - Erik Struebig
Q: Give us an overview of what Crew Collab is and what you do there.
Crew Collab is a non-profit focused on building awareness of trades as viable, well-paid careers. We run classroom talks, engage with thousands of students, and address practical topics like training pathways and money to help recruit and retain talent in the trades.
#118: The State of the Snow Industry - Mr. Executive
Q: How much of your business is snow versus other services, and how has that balance shifted recently?
Snow is still a major part, but the mix has become more balanced as we've acquired another business; summer green services are growing, and brine is expanding our offerings.
#118: The State of the Snow Industry - Mr. Executive
Q: Billy, give us the quick roundabout information of where you are and what you guys do.
We're based in Plymouth, Michigan, and we handle commercial snow removal, lawn maintenance, landscape design, lighting, holiday lighting, and more, with a large team and a brine operation.
