Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Field Notes: Hops, May 2026
Q: How do you manage training and pest management in the field as the season ramps up?
Training starts in late spring, with strings hung and vines trained upward to around 18 feet by July; we rely on preventive fungicide sprays for downy mildew and an IPM approach guided by scouting to address pests like leaf hoppers and spider mites when necessary.
Field Notes: Hops, May 2026
Q: What are a couple of varieties that didn't meet brewer demand and a couple that consistently perform well?
Newer varieties developed by USDA like Vista and Triumph didn't take off with brewers, while long-standing varieties such as Willamette, Mount Hood, and Magnum consistently perform well and sell out, guiding our ongoing planting choices.
Field Notes: Hops, May 2026
Q: Randy, could you give us a quick background of your operation and the scope of your hops enterprise?
We started growing hops in 2011, now at about four and a half to five acres with roughly 3,000 plants across about 10 varieties, chosen to spread harvests and cater to brewer demand while maintaining some traditional, well-known varieties.
