  • Clearly, It’s “Conservative Colleges Matter”

This pod had always been a bit coy about its politics — why are small rightwing colleges so fascinating? who could possibly say? — but the Kirk episode makes its stance despairingly clear. The host had Chris Rufo on speed dial but can’t spare a moment’s thought for the Texas A&M lecturer who has just been fired for assigning a children’s book that includes discussion of diverse gender identities. I suppose the end of American academic freedom is good for clicks and downloads, but you won’t get m... more

  • Boycott this podcast

The host is so conservative and basically attacking all liberal ideas, values, and identities, and blatantly stood behind Kirk in this episode. Disgusting.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ken Burns Names the 'Greatest Danger' Facing Higher Ed
Q: Do you think you could ever work as a filmmaker within the restrictions being placed upon some of these?
Burns emphasizes commitment to open discussion and argues that it's possible to navigate restrictions while preserving the integrity of documentary storytelling.
Ken Burns Names the 'Greatest Danger' Facing Higher Ed
Q: What do you make of these types of restrictions generally?
Burns argues that restrictions on teaching history come from a broader culture war and that colleges should be laboratories for diverse points of view, not places that enforce a single prescribed narrative.
Are the Kids Alright? We Asked Ian Bogost.
Q: What do you think is the conventional rap on 18-22-year-olds, and how does that differ from what you see?
Bogost explains that the stereotype portrays students as coddled or lazy, but he emphasizes that the real dynamics involve structural changes, expectations, and the evolving promises of higher education that shape behavior on both sides of the classroom. He notes that the environment, not just the students, has shifted in ways that complicate traditional notions of work and learning.
The College Leaders Bashing Higher Ed
Q: Is there a sense that maintaining neutrality is itself a political act?
Yes, because choosing to stay silent on certain issues can be read as support for a political stance, while actively intervening signals a particular political position, leading to a balancing act between free speech, campus safety, and institutional mission.
The College Leaders Bashing Higher Ed
Q: What do you see as the main variations among presidents in how they approach this question of neutrality?
While most share a belief in some form of institutional neutrality, they diverge on emphasis—becoming vocal about core missions like research, or advocating for intervention in campus debates to defend students and the institution against perceived political pressure.
