Like the magazine, the show will “road test” the big ideas that both drive the news and shape our culture. Through conversations—and sometimes sharp debates—with the most insightful thinkers and writers on topics of the day, Radio Atlantic will complicate overly simplistic views. It will cut ... more

  • Centrist Takes

I enjoy this podcast. It’s a calm voice in a sea of hyperbole. That said, the discussion of Graham Platner’s past seems wildly incomplete given the recent revelations around the AIPAC- ties held by the writer of the NYT article attempting to assassinate his character. Its disappointing.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

What Will Happen to Birthright Citizenship?
Q: What broader implications would a ruling against birthright citizenship have?
A ruling against birthright citizenship could threaten multiracial democracy, revive debates about who counts as American, and accelerate efforts to redefine civil rights protections, potentially unwinding the progress achieved since Reconstruction and Civil Rights eras.
What Will Happen to Birthright Citizenship?
Q: What would happen if the executive order approach were adopted without amending the Constitution?
Implementing such changes without a formal amendment would unleash chaos—requiring birth proofs for all, creating bureaucratic headaches, risking statelessness for some, and undermining the basic rights framework the country has built since the Civil War era.
What Will Happen to Birthright Citizenship?
Q: What are the main legal arguments against the 14th Amendment's interpretation?
Opponents often argue for a narrower interpretation tied to allegiance and jurisdiction, suggesting that citizenship should depend on more than merely birth on U.S. soil; however, the guest contends this is ahistorical and inconsistent with the amendment's purpose and past court precedents.
What Will Happen to Birthright Citizenship?
Q: Where did this idea of birthright citizenship in America come from?
Birthright citizenship stems from a centuries-old Anglo-American principle, with the 14th Amendment intended to realize the Declaration of Independence's promise of equality; the debate centers on whether that equality was meant to be universal or constrained by certain historic prejudices, as interpreted by later courts and political actors.
What Will Happen to Birthright Citizenship?
Q: Can you set the scene for us?
Birthright citizenship has deep roots in the 14th Amendment, designed to fulfill America's equality promises, but today it faces a high-stakes legal challenge that could redefine who is considered a citizen. The guest frames the issue within historical intent and constitutional interpretation, emphasizing the contrast between past commitments and present political pressures.
