Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Architect of Scale: Ion Stoica on Open Source, AI, and the Future of Data
Q: How did you get started on this path and what motivated you to build in this space?
He explains a long-standing passion for solving problems, starting in academia, moving to industry, and focusing on scalable data systems, with Spark emerging to address interactive queries and scalable machine learning. He emphasizes the need to solve real problems and to pursue opportunities where open-source momentum can translate into practical products when there is customer demand.
Gleb Mezhanskiy on Rewriting the Migration Playbook with AI
Q: How do you see migrations evolving in the next couple of years with AI advancing?
Migrations are expected to become much more autonomous, with AI agents performing the bulk of rewrite and validation work while humans intervene only for high-level decisions and governance. This shift will be coupled with better data modeling, testing, and context-aware tooling to deliver faster, cheaper, and more reliable migrations, especially at enterprise scale.
Gleb Mezhanskiy on Rewriting the Migration Playbook with AI
Q: What got you to focus on migrations and build a company around solving that problem?
The founder's experience at Lyft, Autodesk, and a data-forward startup showed that even highly data-driven, technologically capable organizations struggle with migration due to the enormous manual effort, data dependencies, and the need for accurate testing. This pain point—combined with a belief that tooling could automate the tedious parts—drove Datafold to tackle migrations head-on.
Gleb Mezhanskiy on Rewriting the Migration Playbook with AI
Q: Could you share what is unique about Datafold for migrations compared to general AI tools or transpilers?
Datafold emphasizes end-to-end migration with an agent-based workflow that rewrites code, tests, and validates within Coalesce-like pipelines, leveraging strong data context and testing capabilities rather than just translating SQL. This reduces manual effort, accelerates timelines, and provides a production-ready migration path rather than a mere translation, addressing the context gap that generic AI tools miss.
Mid-Year Reality Check: Data Predictions With Mike Palmer
Q: How do you see analytics changing in the AI era?
Palmer explains that the role of analytics will shift from static BI to action-oriented workflows, with AI enabling broader, platform-based applications and more end-user empowerment.
