Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

"Nature-Based and Tech-Based Carbon Removal Work Better Together," Christoph Gebald, Climeworks CEO
Q: What are the major technological breakthroughs and operational lessons that have enabled Icelandic deployment and ongoing scale?
Key breakthroughs include advanced, durable filter materials that reduce energy usage and raise throughput, modular plant design, and an innovation center that lets us test hundreds of materials quickly. Operational lessons center on adapting to changing atmospheric conditions, humidity, wind, and extreme temperatures, which have been integrated back into product development to improve reliability in real-world environments.
"Nature-Based and Tech-Based Carbon Removal Work Better Together," Christoph Gebald, Climeworks CEO
Q: How did you decide to focus on carbon removal, and what inspired you to start Climeworks?
My combination of a lifelong dream to be an entrepreneur, love of the outdoors, and a fascination with exponential technology led me to pursue direct air capture. After lab successes and recognizing the climate signal from personal experiences, I co-founded Climeworks to deploy DAC at scale.
"Accuracy is the most important thing for carbon markets," Nick Marshall Project Developer Forum Chair
Q: How do you see the future of demand and the role of compliance versus voluntary markets?
He argues that more compliance schemes are necessary to create certainty and scale, while the voluntary market serves as a testing ground for new ideas, but only compliance programs will drive large-scale, durable emissions reductions.
"Accuracy is the most important thing for carbon markets," Nick Marshall Project Developer Forum Chair
Q: What are the biggest barriers to bringing high-quality projects to market today?
The guest states that demand is the critical barrier; even with strong methodologies, a lack of clear demand and price signals constrains project development and investment decisions.
"Accuracy is the most important thing for carbon markets," Nick Marshall Project Developer Forum Chair
Q: What do you see changing on the supply side in the voluntary carbon market in recent years?
He outlines a cycle of sentiment-driven demand, followed by scrutiny and occasional project malpractice, leading to a volatile market but emphasizes ongoing evolution and the improvements in integrity and governance over time.
