  • A Bit of Encouragement

Love this show and how Meg’s outlook on life is! My call to homeschool was of course at the perfect time-right in the middle of a full house DIY remodel. Having three kids, two adults and our dog living in our garage while homeschooling for the past year has been a challenge, but tiling the house at 4 am has given me so much time to listen to this show and I feel like I start my day off better because of it. Thank you for your encouraging words!!

  • Convinced me!

A few years ago when I felt like our family was being called to homeschool, I was really nervous and didn’t even know where to start. We have a lot of friends that homeschool, but listening to Meg’s podcast truly helped solidify our family’s decision to homeschool our kids. I still listen today to continue to build my confidence as a homeschool mom and get new ideas. THANK YOU!!!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#365 Teaching Kids to Listen (Without Pressure)
Q: How do you get a three-and-a-half-year-old to repeat what you say or answer questions without turning it into a pressure-filled test?
Respond with patience and frame learning as a playful activity rather than a test. Start with short, light prompts, use narration and hands-on or visual prompts, and avoid pressuring her to provide a perfect answer. If she says I don't know, acknowledge it, provide space to think, and reframe with a moment of reflection or a different prompt like “Tell me something you remember” to keep engagement without making it feel like a quiz.
#358 The Homeschool Bible an interview with Mandy Davis from Home Built Education
Q: So Mandy, why don't you start by introducing who you are and what led you to homeschooling?
I'm Mandy Davis, a former school principal who moved from the traditional system into homeschooling to give her kids a more intentional, culture-based education, and I wrote The Homeschool Bible to help families navigate that transition with a strong philosophy and practical tools.
#356 From Public School to Homeschool: Managing Downtime Without Screens How to help your child adjust to shorter school days without constant entertainment.
Q: How should I handle a five-year-old who's used to a full school day and now has only one to two hours of instructional time per day?
Focus on short, high-impact instructional bursts (5–10 minutes) aligned to the child's level, and fill the rest with engaging habits, chores, and open-ended play. Pair these with a predictable routine—breakfast, chores, learning, lunch—and separate fun activities like playdates, museum trips, and outdoor time to channel energy and curiosity without pressuring for long instructional blocks.
#354 Growing Your Family Without Losing Your Homeschool: Homeschooling Through Pregnancy, Newborns, and Toddlers
Q: Christina from Texas asks about homeschooling with toddlers and possibly adding a newborn.
The host encourages embracing a relational, flexible approach over a pristine, perfectly planned routine, explaining that pregnancy, newborns, and toddlers can be integrated into everyday life without sacrificing learning. She shares personal experiences of scaling back expectations, focusing on learning through living together, and letting go of rigid schedules to allow the family to grow alongside the education.
#353 The Right Work at the Right Time in Homeschooling
Q: Is it beneficial to do the same lessons at the same time for different ages, or should there be differentiated instructions?
It's possible to combine lessons for group subjects like science and art, but for individualized subjects like math and reading, differentiation usually works best to cater to each child's unique pace and strengths.
