One of my very favorite podcasts! I love hearing guests speak on topics from physical movement to parenting to disability. I get exposed to new and different perspectives which I really appreciate. I also love listening to Virginia and Corinne talk about fashion, diet culture, dating, lifting weights… I’d probably listen to them talk about anything. Thanks for making this delightful and informative show.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Price of Being a Good Girl
Q: What is the message you hope readers take away about healing and family?
Healing comes from facing hard truths about the past, acknowledging systemic harms, and choosing to build new relationships rooted in empathy and transparency, which can counteract the shame that the original system relied on and reshape the idea of what constitutes a family.
The Price of Being a Good Girl
Q: What sparked your interest in exploring your family's past through the DNA test and historical records?
The DNA test opened a factual connection to my sister and pushed me to understand the broader social machinery—homes for unwed mothers and coercive adoption—that shaped my mom's life and our family's trajectory, framing it within a larger history of racialized gender control.
"I Refuse To Be Good"
Q: What has changed and what hasn't changed when it comes to how blackness and fatness are policed for women?
The guest explains that stereotypes around Blackness and fatness have historical roots and continue to be braided, with brief moments of progress followed by backlash, especially amplified for women.
"I Refuse To Be Good"
Q: So why don't we just start by having you tell listeners a little bit about who you are and what you do?
Savala introduces herself as a writer, mom, and lawyer, and describes her work at UC Berkeley, framing her identity through anti-diet and body liberation work.
When Your Teen Has an Eating Disorder
Q: How do parents manage behaviors like hiding food or lying about eating?
Parents should respond with compassion, encouraging their children to eat more and ensure they have access to a variety of foods.
