  • Read the Book

After finishing American Psycho, I searched for a podcast that would do a deeper dive into the themes and interpretations of the book. This was not it.

I find it totally bizarre that one of the hosts had recently read the book and both hosts repeatedly get important facts wrong.

Seems like zero research or thoughtfulness went into the episode. Sounds like two buddies bantering over beers. And I don't even trust their opinion because they don't know Lewis marries Courtney.

  • Best book pod

Love the online-ish humor & that they even read manifestos. Analysis can be very insightful and wide-ranging. Covers all dif politics and whackos and classics. Well-researched on backgrounds. Good companion to lit Twitter.

  • Haven’t listened to it but I plan to

From all accounts from trysted sources, this is as modern a podcast as the current housing crisis in Australia. It’s as if cult classics like Office Space and The Craft birthed these storytellers which ironically almost have nothing to do with books or literature. Take my word for it, I haven’t even listened to it, you’ll be pleased with what you hear. I plan to listen to it on my upcoming holiday

  • Hilarious…wicked…utterly lovable!

You guys are awesome! Hard to find podcasts that are both “dark” and brainy. This one’s among the few. In the event that this review is seen, please consider doing an episode on THE ANATOMY OF MELANCHOLY. It’s primordial “woo” and totally insane.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Carbon Pages w/ Daniel Gavilovski
Q: What motivated you to combine the Dumer-Flinner coming-of-age arc with a rise-to-power narrative about the Nazbol trio?
I wanted to fuse two separate fascinations I had—an intimate, inward-looking urban protagonist and a grand, historical-epic arc—into one story that could interrogate both individual vanity and collective mythology without losing emotional grounding.
#140 Towards a Gay Art of Suffering w/ David Moulton
Q: What role does literature play in giving voice to suffering, according to Genet and others?
Literature provides a way to articulate extremity and intensity, turning private pain into shareable insight and enabling readers to inhabit experiences beyond their own.
#140 Towards a Gay Art of Suffering w/ David Moulton
Q: But first of all, the animating question of the essay, what is a gay art of suffering?
It's about reframing pain not as a problem to be solved but as a condition that can be transformed into art and meaning, often by engaging with canonical authors who explored homosexuality as a confrontation with life's limits.
Fedbook w/ John Jay Stancliff
Q: What kind of research informed the depiction of extremist groups and intelligence work?
I drew on general knowledge of parapolitics and historical context, plus careful reading and interpretation of real-world frameworks. I did not rely on firsthand combat experience, instead focusing on plausible, researched detail to support the narrative without claiming ultimate authenticity.
Fedbook w/ John Jay Stancliff
Q: Did you have a clear ending in mind from the start, or did it evolve as you wrote?
I had a strong sense of where the story would go once the main arc and main characters were established, but many details evolved through drafting and revisions. The climax was shaped by how the main character's motivations and relationships coalesced across the latter parts of the book.
