  • Read the Book

After finishing American Psycho, I searched for a podcast that would do a deeper dive into the themes and interpretations of the book. This was not it.

I find it totally bizarre that one of the hosts had recently read the book and both hosts repeatedly get important facts wrong.

Seems like zero research or thoughtfulness went into the episode. Sounds like two buddies bantering over beers. And I don't even trust their opinion because they don't know Lewis marries Courtney.

  • Haven’t listened to it but I plan to

From all accounts from trysted sources, this is as modern a podcast as the current housing crisis in Australia. It’s as if cult classics like Office Space and The Craft birthed these storytellers which ironically almost have nothing to do with books or literature. Take my word for it, I haven’t even listened to it, you’ll be pleased with what you hear. I plan to listen to it on my upcoming holiday

  • Hilarious…wicked…utterly lovable!

You guys are awesome! Hard to find podcasts that are both “dark” and brainy. This one’s among the few. In the event that this review is seen, please consider doing an episode on THE ANATOMY OF MELANCHOLY. It’s primordial “woo” and totally insane.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Fedbook w/ John Jay Stancliff
Q: What kind of research informed the depiction of extremist groups and intelligence work?
I drew on general knowledge of parapolitics and historical context, plus careful reading and interpretation of real-world frameworks. I did not rely on firsthand combat experience, instead focusing on plausible, researched detail to support the narrative without claiming ultimate authenticity.
Fedbook w/ John Jay Stancliff
Q: Did you have a clear ending in mind from the start, or did it evolve as you wrote?
I had a strong sense of where the story would go once the main arc and main characters were established, but many details evolved through drafting and revisions. The climax was shaped by how the main character's motivations and relationships coalesced across the latter parts of the book.
Fedbook w/ John Jay Stancliff
Q: How did you approach writing Fedbook, given its shifting tones and registers?
Fedbook was built from an outline that later expanded into a mosaic of styles: one-act play, framing narrative, and naturalistic dialogue. I allowed tonal shifts to emerge naturally through editing, and I leaned into the strength of the characters' relationships to drive the plot rather than forcing a single, static mood.
The Earthen Dark w/ Brad Kelly
Q: Do you think it's just a material quirk of human psychology?
There are so many elements of the man-made world and so many little barriers we've put in our own mind to smooth over the combinatorial complications.
The Earthen Dark w/ Brad Kelly
Q: How long being in the sewer did it take for you to realize that this is the perfect place to set a book?
It didn't take me long. It took me a long time to figure out what the story would be and all of that.
