  • Great show!

John was a great host. We dug into the details of scaling from small multifamily to midsize multifamily properties. He understands the nuances of scaling a company and asked insightful questions. He has a thoughtful approach to his interviews. I recommend John and The Best Ever CRE Show.

  • Love the show, but…

This show is in my queue every day. Love the content! One thing that I find detrimental is that some of the interviewers constantly interrupt the guests. Aside from that, please keep up the great shows!

  • Great content, horrible production

The content on this prodcasf is great, they cover many different sections of CRE. Also a fan of the multiple hosts. The only negative is their production, the volume from the guest and host are often very far apart. Also background thunder sound for the lighting round is obnoxiously loud and completely unnecessary

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

JF 4243: Cold Calling, Deal Flow and Scaling a Real Estate Portfolio ft. Remington Lyman
Q: How do you decide whether a deal is right for you to buy or for a client to buy?
Remington explains he analyzes every deal with the intention of possibly buying it himself, then uses the clients when appropriate; he prioritizes deals that fit his portfolio strategy and often networks with other brokers to source opportunities.
JF 4243: Cold Calling, Deal Flow and Scaling a Real Estate Portfolio ft. Remington Lyman
Q: What are three actionable tips for interns to improve cold calling today?
Start with an identity-enhancing intro (e.g., mentioning being an OSU baseball player interning at the brokerage) to build rapport, offer a specific next-step rather than a generic offer, and use a solid CRM to track all leads and avoid slipping through the cracks.
JF 4234: CRE Recession, Inflation Trends and Investment Strategy ft. Anna Kelley
Q: What are the key forces currently driving inflation and how should investors think about them?
The discussion emphasizes inflationary pressures coming from a mix of higher treasury yields, supply chain disruptions, and geopolitical shocks. Investors should track whether inflationary forces are stronger than deflationary ones, which helps determine how to hedge and structure investments for long-term cash flow and resilience.
JF 4230: Ground Leases, Deal Discipline and CRE Longevity ft. John McNellis
Q: Why did you stay focused on a two-hour drive from San Francisco instead of expanding geographically?
Because the best opportunities were in a tight, familiar geographic area where relationships, knowledge of intersections, and trusted partners exist; it reduces risk and makes it easier to manage a growing but manageable portfolio.
JF 4230: Ground Leases, Deal Discipline and CRE Longevity ft. John McNellis
Q: John, how do you get into ground leases if you don't have Chick-fil-A on a first-name basis or Walmart nearby?
Start with retail specialization: work for a retail company to gain inside knowledge, partner with tenants locally, and build relationships; you need to understand the geography and intersections, then gradually identify opportunities with early-stage lease deals and simple, scalable structures.
