With Important information and cogent analysis, the B:BB paints a detailed picture of the Georgia election field in a mere 15 minutes. Although I live in Florida, I watch Georgia elections because Georgia is a battleground state that’s in the midst of auspicious change. I’m envious. Thank you GPB and Skip Fowler for a great podcast.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Inside Georgia’s Push to Regulate Social Media and AI for Kids
Q: What are the most notable bills considered this session and what happened to them?
Bills like the App Store Accountability Act and Senate Bill 495 sought to curb addictive design features and enable parental controls, but not all passed due to lobbying and political dynamics; some measures advanced to other committees for further refinement.
Georgia Lawmaker Casey Carpenter on Homelessness Prevention and Free Speech in Music
Q: What is the rationale behind your bill to protect artistic expressions in trials?
The idea is to prevent prosecutors from automatically using lyrics or other artistic expressions as evidence of criminal wrongdoing, unless it's appropriate and presented in a way that does not taint the jury or chill creative expression.
Georgia Lawmaker Casey Carpenter on Homelessness Prevention and Free Speech in Music
Q: How does the proposed prevention mechanism work in practice?
The bill would direct grants through the Department of Community Affairs to local programs that already serve communities, with private sector participation to stretch dollars and ensure communities have skin in the game.
Georgia Lawmaker Casey Carpenter on Homelessness Prevention and Free Speech in Music
Q: What led you to focus on homelessness prevention in this session?
I saw firsthand that investing early—before people end up homeless—saves money and mitigates human suffering. The state had backfilled federal gaps, but there was no consistent prevention mechanism, so we aimed to create one under the Housing Trust Fund.
School Discipline, Financial Literacy, and Juvenile Justice Reform
Q: So tell us about this.
The bill expands financial literacy education from 8th grade through high school, extending the scope to kindergarten in order to give children a foundational understanding of money and currency early in life.
