  • Needed Precipitation

When I was in Georgia politics, the Atlanta newspaper supposedly covered the region “…like the dew.” By the time I left, the combined Atlanta newspapers were retracting in both areas of coverage and availability.

Thanks to this podcast, at least the important subject of Georgia politics is back, and now not just covering area like dew… it’s a nice spring shower of information, all over the world.

    Highly recommended.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Georgia Map Fight Heats Up
Q: What can Democrats actually do to influence this process beyond simply objecting to it?
Democrats emphasize moral outrage, maintain vocal opposition, highlight corruption, and push for public messaging to mobilize voters, while noting potential cross-party alignments in other states as examples of how to influence outcomes; they also stress the importance of not being resigned and leveraging messaging ahead of November.
Elena Parent Reflects on Life in Georgia’s Democratic Minority
Q: What worries you most about your party going into the next election cycle?
Both parties are too captive to activist bases and special interests, which pushes them away from the broad middle and makes governing for the general electorate harder. The increasing precision of map drawing compounds this by locking in seats, pushing parties toward primary voters rather than general voters.
Voter Questions, Primary Answers
Q: For just the Supreme Court of Georgia, why does the ballot say to succeed the incumbent and also list an incumbent?
The hosts explain that Supreme Court seats are six-year terms and that ballots can show an incumbent while also presenting a potential replacement or challenger, which creates the appearance that the seat is both held and up for renewal in the same ballot, depending on the county and the race structure.
Warnock’s Voting Rights Warning
Q: And I want to play a clip from Derrick Johnson, who called on high school athletes to reconsider attending states undermining voting rights. Is that where you think going there could help pass voting rights legislation?
Warnock indicates a broad, multi-faceted strategy, suggesting an all-hands-on-deck approach with different tactics, including political pressure and legislative action, to advance voting rights amid opposition.
Warnock’s Voting Rights Warning
Q: Senator, what about the Supreme Court ruling and the fallout that we're already seeing, including in states like Georgia, what about it is so problematic for you?
Warnock argues that the ruling undermines voting rights, increases barriers to participation, and threatens the progress made since the civil rights era, framing it as a pivotal threat to democracy that requires sustained political and public engagement.
