  • Barron’s

Very little about actual investment planning. It’s basically an attempt to highlight how women and minorities are amazing but those white men are just bad.

  • Sad to witness

First WSJ turns woke... then Barron's. I'm sorry, I don't need to hear from Barry Ritholtz, who developed his NYC firm with blogs that promoted anti-conservativism, Trump-hate, etc., to learn how to develop content. This May 2023 episode belongs in 2016 when Barry was in the business paying these people for their nonsense extra blogs that helped no one with their personal finances or investing issues.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Mary Beth Franklin: Social Security, Medicare, and Smarter Planning
Q: What role do longevity estimates play in shaping Social Security and Medicare planning?
Advisors should use longevity calculators and family history to gauge life expectancy, but also acknowledge uncertainty; planning should build in guaranteed income like Social Security and consider fixed costs, with a prudent balance between risk and safety nets.
Mary Beth Franklin: Social Security, Medicare, and Smarter Planning
Q: How should couples coordinate when one spouse is the primary breadwinner and the other has a lower benefit?
Have the higher-earning spouse wait to claim until 70 to maximize their benefit, then coordinate the survivor benefit so the widow(er) can still receive substantial income if the higher earner dies first; analyze joint lifetimes and ensure the survivor benefit is optimized rather than ignored.
Mary Beth Franklin: Social Security, Medicare, and Smarter Planning
Q: Mary Beth, what is the biggest miss advisors have when it comes to Social Security and Medicare planning?
The fear that Social Security will run out of money often leads clients to claim benefits too early; advisors need to lay out options, discuss pro and con, and demonstrate the long-term consequences of early claiming, including potential 30% lifetime cuts and impact on survivor benefits.
Jill Zucker: Why AI Could Reprice Financial Advice
Q: What skills will advisors need to stay in demand as AI handles more of the technical work?
Emotional intelligence and the ability to connect with multiple generations, plus a focus on high-value, end-to-end planning and family-office-type capabilities, will be increasingly important.
Merit’s Sarah Mouser: How to Recruit and Develop Next-Gen Talent
Q: What are the main drivers for attracting and retaining next-gen talent in wealth management?
Mentorship, in-office exposure, a clear and transparent career path, and opportunities to take ownership and work across various departments are the primary factors that young professionals seek, more than immediate high pay.
