  • Great Command and Leadership Podcast

I like this podcast because they are directly teaching how Alan Brunacini led, and they do it without an overload of testosterone, ego, and bravado that many of the fire service influencers depend on to convey the message. These guys are straightforward without taking themselves too seriously. Love this podcast!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Dan Madrzykowski And Fire Dynamics On The Exterior
Q: Where do you see EV and other advanced vehicle fires going in the next five years in terms of handling and standardization?
Key points include the lack of standardized vehicle marking/badging making initial assessment difficult, the need for pre-plans for CNG and EV tanks, and a move toward detailed guidance from FSRI and 1700 appendices to inform tactics; responders should switch to exterior lines, assume hidden hazards, and plan for lasting battery risk.
Dan Madrzykowski And Fire Dynamics On The Exterior
Q: What are the biggest misconceptions about exterior fires and what are we missing in terms of their behavior and exposure?
The panel highlights that exterior fires require recognizing that fires can move between exterior and interior spaces, that wind-driven dynamics, ventilation, and the location of the fire (flow paths) matter; responders often rely on indoor tactics and thus need to adapt to non-structure scenarios, including vehicle and outdoor fires, with appropriate protection of exposures and timely water application.
Three Levels Of Air Management
Q: How can departments practically measure and improve air consumption during drills?
Departments should use realistic drills that mimic fire-ground tasks, track initial bottle pressures, alert thresholds, and time-to-exit metrics, then compile numbers across individuals, crews, and a battalion to set achievable benchmarks and drive training improvements.
Three Levels Of Air Management
Q: What are the main levels of air management and why is it important to treat them differently?
Air management is practiced at three levels—task, tactical, and strategic—each requiring specific ownership and communication, from the individual firefighter through the company officer to the battalion chief, so that everyone understands how much air remains and when to exit or reinforce.
NFPA 1700, Connecting The Work
Q: What are the expected changes leading up to the next revision of NFPA 1700 in 2031?
Emerging trends such as the growth of commercial buildings and the impact of new technologies will be key focuses in the next revision, with a push for continuous improvement based on ongoing research.
